“I need to speak with you both.”
Her smile fades and her brows furrow in worry.“I’ll get him.”
When they enter the living room, my father has the sameworried look.
“What’s going on, son?”
“I’ve been trying to find out what happened to Casey thenight of the barbecue.”
“Not her again!”Mother exclaims.“I thought you moved passedthis, Ethan.”
“Did either of you say something to upset her?”
“No, we got along fine,” Dad answers.“She’s a nice girl.”
I raise a brow at my mother, waiting for her reply.Shelooks down at her nails in disinterest.
“I didn’t even speak to her that day.”
“Did you see her talking to anyone who may have saidsomething?”
“No, son.Is she all right?”Dad asks.
“I’ve only been able to get bits and pieces from her, andthat was only when she was drunk. She just keeps telling me that she did it forme and that she’s not good enough for me.”
“Well, she’s right.”
“Mother.”I give her a warning glare.
“Don’t ‘Mother’ me.You gave your word. You need toconcentrate on Shae now. She’s your future.”
“I said I would court her, and I am.I can’t force somethingthat’s not there.”
“You wouldn’t have to if you forgot about the tramp.”
“Helena!”Dad yells.
I’m out of the couch and in front of her before I can eventhink.I stand over her, breathing heavily, my fists balled in anger.
“Ethan… Watch it.”
The sound of my father’s voice reins me in just a little, and I remember that she’s my mother.
“Don’t you dare call her outside her name again!Understand?”
“Don’tyoudare talk to me like that.Alpha or not,I’m still your mother!”
“And that’s the only reason why I’m giving you averbalwarning.”
“Ethan, you need to cool off.”
I nod to my dad and try to keep my anger in check as I walkout. If I don’t, I might end up doing something I’ll regret.

A baby.Ethan’s baby, growing inside me.I’m getting used tothe idea.I won’t need his shirt anymore because I’ll have an actual part ofhim with me… forever.I wonder if his mother knew, would she still push meaway?Itisher grandchild, after all.I lay my palm flat on my stomachas I stare up at the moon. It’s not full yet, but I figured my situationwarrants a quiet, moon-watching night. Is it a boy or girl? What will I namehim or her?If it’s a boy, I’d love to name him Ethan.Ethan Jr.—everyonewould probably call him EJ.If it’s a girl, definitely Katherine, after my mom.Girl or boy, I hope the baby has his eyes.I feel the little flutter in mytummy and wonder if this is what it’s always been—the baby. The thing is, itonly seems to happen when Ethan is around.
A sound comes from the bushes, and I turn to see if Sheriffhas come to visit. When he emerges, I sit cross-legged, smiling at him as hetrots over.I reach out to pet him, and he excitedly licks my palm.
