I don’t want to… I won’t!He’s mine. He’s the one thing Ihave for me and me alone… and he loves me and… Oh, my God, I love him.

“Don’t tell me you think you’re in love with him,” Helenascoffs.

“What if I am?”

“Then you’re selfish.Shae may not be the love of his life; shemay never be, butsheis what he needs. She fits in with this family.Youdon’t.You never will.Ethan is destined for greatness, and you would only draghim down.”

Selfish. There’s that word again.Am I being selfish?Ofcourse not!How can I be when he loves me, too?He wants to be with me just asmuch as I want to be with him.But am I holding him back?

“No…” I shake my head.

“I promise you, as long as I have life, I will make yoursmiserable. You end this relationship or I will.Byanymeans necessary.”

“Are youthreateningme?”

“Yes, I am.Stayawayfrom my son.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Like I said, by any means necessary.Trust me, you are disposable.”

Is she saying what I think she’s saying?

“What are you going to do, kill me?”I roll my eyes.

Her answering smirk sends a chilling sensation through my body, and I get the feeling she’s a woman who’ll definitely follow through on herthreats. It’s not like she doesn’t have the money to pull it off.Having madeher point clear, she walks away but turns back to me at the door.

“Don’t even think of mentioning this to Ethan.I gave birthto him.If you force him to choose between us, you may not like the outcome.”

She leaves the room, dragging my heart on the floor behindher.

What am I going to do?

***Ethan***

“What’s wrong?”

I tighten my arms around her waist, pulling her against me.While everyone else is enjoying the fireworks, she’s just staring down at theground blankly. She’s been like this all afternoon.

“No matter how many times you ask that question, my answer’sgoing to be the same—nothing,” she replies, not hiding her annoyance.

“Is this about what I said in the kitchen?”

“No.”

“Are you in pain?”

“No.I told you earlier, I’m fine.”

“Then what is it?”I persist.“Is it your dad?Clara called, they got home safely.”

“I’m just a little tired, okay?”

“Do you want me to kick them out?I will.”

“They’re your family.I’ll just lie down for a bit.”

“Come.”
