The weasel’s one good eye opens wide in fear.I should snaphis neck and be done with it because I already know who sent him.I just wantto know what Stone’s angle is.This one’s a new wolf, maybe two or three moons. Why would Stone sendhim? One thing’s for sure—after what he did toCasey, he’s not leaving here alive.

“What’s your interest in the human girl?”I ask.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“No?”

I slam my fist into the left side of his face. The chairhe’s tied to topples and slides across the room.Brick and Charlie pick it up,and I walk over to them.

“That was just a small fraction of my strength, and I can dothis all night,” I warn him.

“I swear…” Fear rattles his body.“He only told me to runher off the road.”

“Why?”

“He doesn’t tell us why.Only a picture and instructions.”

“I know about the others, but why the human?”

He shakes his head.“I don’t know.I swear I don’t know.”

“Okay.I believe you.”He lets out a sigh of relief and givesme a grateful stare.“Just give Stone a little message for me.”

I take his head in my hands, and my friends step back.

“No!”he begs.“Please, don’t—”

Whatever he was going to say is cut off by the sound ofcracking bones.I rip his head from his body, letting it fall next to thechair.

“See that it ends up somewhere Stone will find it.”

“Oh… Hey,” I greet the sheriff.

Crap.I look like hell and here he is in front of me lookinglike a million bucks. His brows knit in worry and he takes my hand.

“Are you okay?”he asks.

“Yeah, it’s just… It’s been a crazy day.”

“Come here.”

He pulls me into his arms, and I try to draw from hisstrength.God knows I need some right now.I finally got Daddy down to bed and I’mphysically and emotionally drained.I wrap my arms around his waist and breathein his scent. How can it be calming and arousing at the same time?

“I’m sorry I didn’t call.I… I can’t make it tonight.”

“It’s fine.Do you want to talk about it?”

Every part of my brain is screaming “yes,” but I step backand shake my head.

“I just need some alone time.”

“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?”

“I’m sure.”

He nods reluctantly.“Call me if you need anything.Anything.”
