“Are you saying I’m not honest, Miss Suzie?”
“Oh, you know what I mean.Let me get you a table.”
“Actually, we just need something to go.”
“Sure thing, darlings.Come to the counter.”
As we move forward, I look to the two couples sitting in abooth at the back. The men avert their gazes and sit up straight. Both womensmile, and I nod in acknowledgment, then turn my attention to Casey as she tugson my arm.
“Not even two minutes and you’re already scoping out yournext victim?”she asks with a teasing smile.
“Victim?I recall you were a very willing and eagerparticipant.”
“Willing and eager to do it again.”
She bites her lip, and the look she gives me almost makes meforget we’re in public.I should have just taken her back to my place to beginwith.
“I’m happy to oblige, Miss Bryan.”
“Good.”
While we wait for our food, we chit-chat with Miss Suzie andDebbie, the waitress; at this time of night, there aren’t many customers.Whenwe leave, Casey takes my hand once more.I love the way her skin feels.Myscent lingers on her body, mixing with hers. It’s a potent mixture I couldeasily drown in.Before we even leave the parking lot, she begins to unwrap hersandwich.
“I thought you weren’t hungry?”I ask.
“Certain activities always open up my appetite.”
She smiles at me with a mouthful, and I turn onto the road.
***Casey***
What could he possibly have to show me at this hour?Heturns off the road and drives down a dirt track, slowly maneuvering around potholes.
“Where are you taking me?”
“You’ll see,” he replies.
I take another bite of my Reuben and turn to him.“This isreally good. You should have yours before it gets cold.”
“We’re almost there.”
I turn on the radio and search for a station, stopping whenI hear Florence Welch’s voice.Putting my feet up on the dash, I bop my headwhile I eat my sandwich.I notice he starts tapping the steering wheel.Thatescalates to humming.
“Is she saying ‘you’re giving me sexy dolphin’?”he asks, incredulity in his tone.
I almost choke on my food.Tears spring to my eyes as Idouble over in laughter.
“Sweet nothing!She’s saying sweet nothing!”
He thinks about it for a few seconds and then shakes hishead.
“I don’t think so.I have impeccable hearing, and I hear ‘sexydolphin.’”
“Yeah, ’cause that makessomuch sense.”
He smiles, and I know he’s teasing.Smart—check, gorgeous—check, sense of humor—check, amazing lay—check. The man is damn near perfect.
A few minutes later, he parks the truck and kills theignition.I look around, and all I see are trees, but I hear water running.Reachingacross to the backseat, he grabs a blanket before opening my door.
