“Better, now that you’re here.”

“Can you tell me what happened?”

“Last night… on my way home… something ran across the road.Iswerved.I hit a tree and got out of the car. This huge wolf came out ofnowhere….”

She trails off, tears pooling in her eyes.

“Did you recognize him?”

“No, but he was black… with blue eyes.”

“Okay.”I stroke her hair and kiss her forehead.“Get somerest.I’ll check on you tomorrow.”On my way out, I turn to her parents.“Ipromise, whoever is responsible for this will pay.”

They both nod and her father shakes my hand.On the drivehome, I rack my brain to come up with a reason why Stone would attack her.Sofar, he’s only been causing trouble for my pack. Why is he branching out? What’shis angle?

When I arrive home, Charlie and Brick are waiting for me.Inside, Charlie hands me a list.

“All the animal attacks within the last couple of months. The names I circled are wolves. You might wanna pay close attention to those.”

“Why?”I look at the circled names, all women, and realize Iknow them all.“Are you kidding me?”

“Nope.Spoke to all of them myself.”

“Fuck!”

I look down at the list once more. The only thing thesewomen have in common is me.They were all possible mates The Council set me upwith. This is how he’s trying to get back at me?I get a heavy feeling in thepit of my stomach, and I turn to Charlie.

“Casey.”

“You think he’d go that far?”Brick asks.“I think he wastrying to scare the others off, but… she’s human.”

“And probably wouldn’t survive an attack, especially if heknows—”

“You wanna put someone on her?”Charlie cuts me off.

“She’s mine.It’smyduty to protect her.”

***Casey***

I walk into the sheriff’s office, a wicker basket on my arm.Mary’s face lights up when she sees me.That’s a change.Charlie and Brick waveto me from their desks.

“Casey!”Mary exclaims.

“Hey, Mary!What’s up girl?”

“Nothing, as usual. It’s so boring around here.”

“That’s good for me then.Come, I brought sustenance.”Imotion to the basket and head over to where the men are.“Working hard, boys,or hardly working?”

Charlie walks up to me and plants a kiss on my cheek.

“Since the boss is within earshot, I’m gonna say that we’vebeen workingextremelyhard.”

“Lunch?”

“I’m never one to turn down a gesture like that,” Brick sayswith a grin as he approaches.

“Good, ’cause there’s plenty.”I offer him my cheek, and hekisses it also.Reaching into the basket, I pull out a stack of containers Iset aside for the sheriff.“Dig in.I’m gonna see the boss.”
