“She knows something, and I’m going to find out what.”
Back in the bedroom, I find Casey cooing to Clara. At leastshe has something to keep her busy.Clara will be fine in a few hours, but Idon’t need to tell her that.I watch as she carefully cleans the wound andbandages it.
“It’s superficial, but I think we should take her to thehospital.”
“I’m fine.I don’t need a hospital.”
“Clara!Oh, thank God.”
“What happened?”I ask, helping her up.
“I got a call about… a patient.”She glances nervously atCasey, so I know it’s wolf-related.“Anyway, since Anna was here, I figured I’djust run out, take care of it and come back. When I got to the house, there wasno one there.I turned to go back to my car, and something knocked me frombehind.”
How could someone have snuck up on her?No one can sneak upon a wolf. She would have smelled him long before he got too close. It had tobe some kind of weapon, or maybe a trap.
“Casey, stay with her.I’ll be right back.”
I get downstairs in time to see Charlie walking in withAnna. She’s wringing her hands, looking nervous and frightened.
“Anna.”
***Ethan***
Her head snaps up at the sound of my gruff voice, fear flashingin her eyes.Good.She’ll tell me exactly what I need to know.
“Sit.”
Taking a seat on the couch, she glances nervously between Charlieand me.
“Am I in trouble?”
“Only if you don’t tell the truth.”
“About what?”
“First, that day at the barbecue. What happened after I leftyou and Casey in the kitchen?”
“I’m so sorry.I didn’t say anything because I didn’t wantto get into trouble.”
“Tell me what happened.”
“She was so sad after… and it’s like I felt her pain.Ididn’t know what to do.”
Tears fill her eyes and spill over, running down her cheeks.
“What do you mean you felt her pain?”I ask.
“By the pool, when I looked into her eyes… I just felt this…connection.I don’t know. It’s like I knew her even though we’d just met.”
“Maybe I can help with that,” Charlie intervenes.“I feltthe same way when I met Ethan.Got even stronger after he became alpha.”
“You mean I’m….”
“You’re meant to be her beta.”
If I wasn’t convinced before, this surely would have removedany doubt. She’s the one.Anna smiles and turns to me confidently.
“Okay.I’ll tell you what happened.”
