“There’s a note. We need to know who she left her note to? If we get it, we’ll know whose prints we need.”
My back snaps up straight. I hiss, “How in the hell did you know she left a note?”
“It was part of her code when she asked us to clean out her—their—life in New York. She let us know one person had the instructions on what to do next. Whomever she trusted has the key to shut this down.”
Beyond trust.I scrub my hands over my face. “Sam, stop.”
“Kane, I have to figure out who Leanne left the message to.”
“Beyond trust.” The words come out choked.
That’s when his fingers still. He jumps up from the chair and types a few commands. The screen goes blank from the lines of scrolling code. Once it does, he drags me back into the fray, where an astounded Renee Miles is demanding someone finds her daughter and brings her in safely.
“We’re trying, Mrs. Miles. We have the where. We have the who.” Sam jerks his thumb at me. “We just don’t know when. We need to get Kane to Leanne as quickly as possible.”
Renee turns and grips my arm. “Save her. Whatever you have to do, save my daughter.”
Thorn jerks my other arm. “We don’t have time for this. Let’s go.”
Without a word, I shake her off and go after him. I don’t pay notice to the number of people who follow me. I’m only focused on one thing—finding Leanne and making amends for letting her crash after all those times she prevented me from doing the same, even when I didn’t know it was her who was keeping me from falling.
The most important thing is on the line—and it has absolutely nothing to do with whatever secrets are contained within the confines of her brainchild. The only secrets I care about are the ones inside her heart.
The woman I love is in danger. And so am I because if Leanne doesn’t survive, there’s no way I will either.

I drop to my knees and trail my fingers over the stone. “Hey, Lee. I’ve missed you.”
The wind is whipping all around me, but I don’t care. I lie down in the snow and wrap my arms around my sister and just hold on for dear life. “God, Lee, it hurts just as much now as when I found out you were murdered. Probably more so because I know the truth. The only thing I still can’t figure out after all this time is why you had my ID on you.”
I inhale the chilled air, unafraid of what’s going to happen at this point. “I cleaned up as much as I could, Lee. Mom and Dad will be taken care of—I promise. I redid the trust. Mom and Dad will inherit all the money. There should be enough to take care of them and anyone they care for well into their hundreds. I promise you, they’ll never want for anything.”
I go on telling her about small gifts I’ve left here and there when my voice finally starts to crack. “I was up half the night trying to figure out what to leave to Kane. It was his birthday yesterday. Oh, don’t think I didn’t see your hand in that, Kylie. How did you know he would be absolutely perfect for me?”
“How did she know that indeed?” a husky baritone murmurs behind me.
I roll to my back when I hear a delicate female question, “Beckett?”
Quickly scrambling to my feet, I take an automatic step away from the couple. Her dark hair and creamy skin are a perfect match for his tattooed hotness. But nothing prepares me for the sorrow in his voice as his eyes scan my features. A myriad of emotions chase one another across his face: devastation, fury, acceptance. Slowly, he nods. “You must be Leanne.”
My breath releases so forcefully, steam rises from my lips. “Yes.”
“Can I ask…”
I immediately begin to shake my head. “No. Not yet.” Soon, everyone will know.
His arm immediately wraps around Paige protectively. “Is it safe for us to be here?”
My eyes scan the area. “For now.” Still, I check my holster to ensure my weapon is in easy reach.
Beckett’s eyes bulge before a small laugh escapes. “Christ. Now, it all makes sense.”
I frown. “What does?”
“There was one night when Ky told Kane the two of you would be perfect for each other…” I adamantly begin shaking my head. Beckett merely cocks his. “Why are you denying something so obvious to the rest of us? Right, sweetheart?”
