“Is this the alibi you want me to tell the agents? You’re not serious.”
“I’m dead serious. People have done crazier things, and I love you. My mind is made up. What do you say? Want to do something absolutely insane with me, like…get married?”
Ring.
Ring.
Jase smiled as I sat frozen, staring at him. For the life of me, words wouldn’t come.
“Think on it, baby.” He glanced at his phone. “But as for now, I’m going to need you to leave. I love you. Be safe. Do as we planned.”
Tiffany threw open the door, practically dragging me out as I nodded.
“I love you too. I…do. I’ll do it. I’ll marry you.”
Jase smiled as Tiffany slammed the door shut, pulling me toward three dark SUVs waiting around the turn. Men were standing outside of them, ready as we were pointed in the direction of the middle one. My head was spinning; my heart was beating on hyper speed.
“You’re getting married?” Tiffany’s words echoed through the parking garage, mirroring the screaming in my own mind as we climbed into the back seat. “I can’t believe it. Are you sure this is what you want? Oh my god! Kody, you said yes.”
The men piled in the car, taking off as I stupidly stared at my best friend.
“I said yes. Holy shit, I said yes.”
“Yeah.”
“But…yeah,” I laughed through the shock. “Yeah, I think…I mean, I know…Jase is the one. So…absolutely. I want to do this.”
“Wow.” Tiff’s face lit up for the first time since the break-in. “I can’t believe it. You’re getting married, Kody. And toJase Colter. The world is going to flip. Do you know how much y’all are on the news as it is? I can’t think. My brain is mush. We’re going to Vegas. We’re going to fucking Vegas! Are you getting a dress? You have to get a dress. Y’all are going to have to buy rings.”
“Whoa.”
“Don’t rain on my reality umbrella. Focusing on this is helping me. Let me plan so you don’t have to. I mean, what’s a maid of honor for, right? Iamyour maid of honor.”
It wasn’t a question as she stared at me.
“I was really thinking about asking Rush.” I rolled my eyes. “Of course you are.”
“Okay, good. So, you’re going to need a dress, shoes, the works. I’ve never been to Vegas. They should have shops all over that place. Do you think they’re open this late—early? We still have to fly there, but it won’t take long. Will you do it right away or will you wait until after you’ve slept, because girl, I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty damn sleepy.”
My yawn was automatic despite the combination of fear, apprehension, and excitement.
“I think sleep would be a good idea.”
“Agreed.”
Grabbing Tiffany’s hand, I watched as the mask she’d worn all day dropped completely. She let go, throwing her arms around my neck as she pulled me in.
“The last few months have been overwhelming as hell. You’ve been through so much. We’ve all had to change our lives around. Between almost losing you twice, and watching Jase almost lose you for good, I don’t think…” she got quiet, pulling back to look at me. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone shut down as much as he did when he thought he lost you to that poison. I saw that same haunted look back in his eyes after I walked out of the gun room. He loves you, Kody. He genuinely, whole-heartedly, is madly head over heels for you.”
“I feel the same about him.”
Tiffany gestured to the luggage in the back of the SUV.
“But were you the one who had the idea to elope?” She shook her head. “Something tells me your boy’s been thinking about this for a lot longer than tonight, and he was just waiting to ask you. Seems fate stepped in and provided him with the perfect opportunity.”
