Felixput a hand on my back. “Canyou please get the manager out here?Weneed someone to jump the battery.”

Seemingrelieved to have a task, he nodded and raced off.

Ilooked atFelixmournfully. “Iwas trying to give you a romantic evening.”

Hechuckled and kissed me on the cheek. “Yousucceeded.Thisis still the best dateI’veever been on.”

Ihuffed. “It’snot perfect.Iwanted it to be perfect.”

Felixlooped his arm through mine and squeezed it. “Perfectis in the eye of the beholder.”

Adriancame through the door.

“It’sus again,”Felixtold him.

“Er, yes.Perrysaid your battery died?”

Iexplained about the kill switch. “Ihave cables, so if someone could give us a jump, we’ll be out of your hair.”

Adriangave me an entreating smile. “Thankyou for your patience.Ido apologize for the oversight on the part of our valet.”Iwanted to roll my eyes butImanaged to stop myself.

“Perry, can you show me where the vehicle is parked?”

Perrysaid, “Sure.Chrisput it down by the parking lot entrance so everyone will see it when they drive by.”

Ilaughed, andFelixchuckled.

Adrianblinked. “Why?”

Perrybeamed. “Becauseit’s the old convertibleColeWashburnwas driving in the picture he posted onInsta.”

Adrianfroze. “Oh, uh, is it some sort of luxury rental?”

Itook great pleasure in saying, “No,FelixandIwere staying at their ranch last week, andColeasked me if he could drive it.”

Adrianvisibly paled. “Isee,” he said faintly.

Inshort orderAdrian’spersonal car, aLexussedan, was parked next to theBuickand the battery was being charged.Adrianwent to do something inside the restaurant andPerryhad been tasked with babysitting me andFelix.

FelixandIwere seated in theBuickwith the hood up and the engine running.Perryleaned against the car on my side, keeping an eye on the jumper cables. He’dapparently not been schooled in discreet customer service, because he kept peppering us with questions.Ididn’t get irritated at him, though, becauseFelixwas smiling wider with every outrageous questionPerryasked.

“Areyou guys a couple?”Yes, we are.

“IsColeWashburnas good-looking in person as he is in the movies?”Yes.

“Isthis car’s trunk big enough to put a dead body in it?”Yes, more than one if they’re small like you.

“Howold is this car?”It’sa 1985 model year.

Adriancame walking up right asPerryasked me, “Sodid you buy this car when it was new?”

Adriansnapped, “Perry!”Icoughed, butFelixroared out a laugh.

“Myguy,” he said toPerry. “Iwould high-five you ifIcould reach you.”
