“Wow, sure. I can get on board with that,” I managed to say. My cock wassoon board with that.
Cole rubbed his hands together. “Well, I was pretty excited about seeing Spence, but I’mveryexcited about the massage!”
Cole had to use the restroom so he and Jason went into the restaurant to order dinner. I stayed laying down across the back seat and petted Dave, who’d been promised another plain chicken breast. I hoped he’d start putting on some weight soon. He was way too skinny under his dirty fur.
Dave had crawled out of his box and stretched across my chest when I heard Jason’s satellite phone ring. He’d left it in the cupholder between the front seats.
I shoved Dave onto the floorboards, brushed the residual dirt off my shirt and grabbed the back of the front seats to leverage myself up.Fuck, that hurt. I hunched over, gasping. Next time, I reminded myself, use your fucking brain. I managed to grab the phone without ripping my shoulder muscles any further. “Hello?” I was panting from the pain but it was easing off.
“Oh, my God! Please tell me Cole’s okay! No, tell me he’s okay and you need me to be his body double so we can break him out of the hospital without anyone knowing!” Wow, Spence sounded a lot more…flamboyant than I was expecting.
“Uh, Spence?”
“Who’s that? Where’s Jason? Oh, my God, has he moved on? Are you some sort of side piece? I’m going to kill him! Cole can’t fight for himself right now!”
“Wait, uh, Spence. I’m…that’s not…. Uh, it’s okay. Jason is still committed to Cole. My name is Will Graham. Jason’s, uh, not here right now and he left the phone with me.”
“And just who are you, Will Graham, to have Jason’s phone right now?” I would swear, if we’d been facing each other in person, Spence would have been snapping his fingers in my face.
“Uh, well.” Shit, I was not prepared to discuss being in a throuple over the phone with one of Cole and Jason’s friends. “Uh, I’m sure you’ve read the stories about the day of the shooting.”
“Of course.”
“Right, uh, so the Good Samaritan who called in the shooting? Well, the real story was a little more complicated than that, but essentially that was me.”
Spence gasped. “You’re the Good Samaritan? You saved Cole’s life?”
“Uh, well, I mean, sort of?” After putting it in danger first.Unintentionally, asshole! Remember to be angry.
“Wow! And now you’re hanging out with Jason? Like you’re friends now?”
I coughed. “Right. We got close. Uh, listen – “
“How’s Cole? Is there any change in his condition?”
“Oh, well, he’s, uh, things are looking up. But Jason thought you were in Tulsa right now, helping your mom? Is that right?”
“Oh.” His voice finally hit a lower register. “Yeah, I came here to move my mom into an assisted living facility, but she ended up passing away suddenly. I’ve stayed to clean out her house and get it ready to sell.”
“Oh, no!” I felt horrible. He didn’t know me, and he had to tell me that? Ugh. “I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. It must have been so awful to lose her so suddenly.”
He sighed. “Thank you, but it was for the best really. She passed away from a heart attack, but I was moving her into a facility because she had dementia. She would have really preferred to go quickly, so I try to console myself with that.”
“That’s good you can hold onto that at least.” Fuck! I was shit at this. “Uh, well, would it cheer you up any to have some visitors?”
Another gasp. “Are you serious? You and Jason? You’re going to be in Oklahoma of all places? When? And I mean, of course! Just say when!”
I’d been keeping an eye on the front doors to the restaurant, and at just that moment Jason and Cole came out.
“Uh, I think we’re about an hour from Tulsa. Is that too soon?”
An actual squeal came across the phone. So not what I’d expected from a badass stuntman.Stereotype much, Will?“Oh, my God! Yes! I’ve only got one spare bedroom, but mom did put a king-size bed in there, so either you and Jason can share if you don’t mind that, or one of you can have the couch.”
“Great, and the one bed will be fine. Oh, uh, we have a cat with us. Is that okay?”
“Oh, sure! My mom had a cat up until a couple of years ago. I’ll see if I can dig the litter box out of the garage.”
“Really? That would be amazing, thank you!” Jason and Cole were about halfway back to the car. “Oh, and this is on the down low, Spence. They still haven’t caught the shooter, so we’re not advertising where we are.”
