“You didn’t even know me when you made that decision.”
That wasn’t entirely true. I ran before I knew him, but being around him, feeling cared for and safe, it empowered me in a way he’d probably never realize. But it didn’t feel like that was something I needed to say out loud, so I stayed quiet and let his fingers relax me as they rubbed up and down my arm.
For a while, both of us were silent, soaking in everything that had happened and changed in the past few hours. None of it I would ever regret, and I hoped Miles wouldn’t either.
When the motions on my arm stopped, I assumed Miles had finally fallen asleep, so I stayed still and closed my own eyes. But then I heard his deep, tired voice say my name.
“Lox?”
“Yeah?”
“You never told me your brother’s name.”
I smiled and looked up at him, resting my chin on my hand. “His name was Adam.”
Chapter Twenty-Five
MILES
Loxley fellasleep in my arms.
I thought it would be another long night of staring at her, marveling at how much had changed in just over a week. But this time, sleep claimed me too. My dreams were strange, as they often are when you're too tired to make sense of them. But this time I was about to determine that the dark figure with no face that appeared was named Adam, and his sole purpose seemed to be protecting Loxley. I tried to tell him she’d always have me there to protect her, but he wasn’t convinced. To be fair, I didn’t sound very convincing either.
Thankfully, the dream dissolved before it could get too deep, and I woke up to the glorious sensation of Loxley’s mouth around me. Her hair tickled my thighs, her movements slow and deliberate. My half-lidded eyes closed entirely as I groaned, coming undone as I listened to her satisfied moan as she swallowed.
When I reached for her, intending to pull her on top of me and return the favor, she backed away with a playful smile. “Get ready for work,” she whispered, winking as she sauntered out of the bedroom. Still dazed, I did as she suggested, throwing on my uniform and splashing cold water on my face to wake up fully.
Once dressed, I found her in the kitchen, pouring coffee into a to-go cup. The sight of her, wearing one of my t-shirts that barely reached mid-thigh, was enough to make me consider calling in sick. I slid behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her against me. My hand slipped down to the waistband of her tiny shorts, teasing her.
“Don’t be late,” she murmured, her head tilting back to rest on my shoulder.
“Captain Sullivan can fire me,” I growled, pressing a kiss to her neck as my fingers found her warmth.
She giggled, her breath hitching. “Then who’d look for Loxley Adams all day?”
I nipped at her neck, soothing the spot with my tongue. “She’d never be found.”
“You’re making being lost forever sound tempting,” she whispered, her voice breathy as I pushed two fingers inside of her.
Her hips began to move with my rhythm, her soft whimpers driving me wild. I wanted to take my time, to spread her out on the counter and make her scream my name until she was hoarse. But time wasn’t on my side, and I wanted her to feel just as needy as I would all day.
“My dick is so hard for you, Lox. I’m going to be thinking about you all day,” I murmured in her ear, my voice rough. “Counting the hours until I’m back home, ready to make you mine all over again.”
She came with a soft cry, trembling in my arms as I held her through it. When I pulled my hand away, I brought my fingers to my lips, savoring her taste. Tasting her there all day was going to make the day even longer, but I reveled in the idea of challenging my restraint.
Grabbing my coffee, I gave her a small wink, before heading out the door. I was still breathing hard and groaning to myself asI drove my patrol car into work. I was going to have to sit there for a while and try not to think about Lox, just so my hard dick wouldn’t go into work with me. It was worth it though.
So was the knowing look Linc gave me as I passed him in the hall on the way to Captain Sullivan’s office to get my assignment for the day.
The workday was uneventful. A few speeding tickets, a barking dog complaint, and lots of time spent trying not to think about Loxley. By the time my shift ended, I was practically vibrating with anticipation, and I drove home like a man possessed.
“Lox, I’m home!” I called out as I walked through the back door in the kitchen.
“In here!” she yelled back.
Following her voice, I went straight into the living room and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw her. She was wearing a pair of oversized waders that nearly swallowed her whole and holding my favorite fishing rod.
“What are you doing?” I asked, torn between amusement and horror.
