“Is that what made you cum so hard? Did it make your corrupt little pussy shake with need, Little Devil?” I frown at his taunting words.

“This is serious. Go check it out.” I stumble away from the fountain as he walks around it. His eyes widen before it glosses over with a clinical calmness that scares me.

“Well damn. I wonder what happened to the poor fucker.” He muses and leans down to inspect the body closer.

I inch forward, too damn nosy to stay put. Each step uncovers the dead person. First a finger, a pale hand, blue frosted lips, and gorged eyes that burn into my soul.

“Oh my god, oh my god.” Each word gets louder as I speak. “That’s a real body, like real.”

My hand covers my mouth as I watch Ronan poke the stiff man. His stomach is cut deep, a line stretching from one side of his abdomen to the other, and his guts seep out onto his legs that are unnaturally bent because of his pose. His exposed skin is pale and blue because of the cold. I look over his expression and it screams that he was in pain. His glossed eyes are wide open and his lips are formed into a nasty scream. The blood that covers his body and clothes is dried over, like he’d been out here for a few days.

“No shit.” He mocks as he stands back up.

He remains emotionless as he walks back around to me. His expression is neutral and unforgiving in the looming shadows.

“That’s horrifying, Ronan, and you look like you don’t care.” Fear crawls at my throat and I want to scream but don’t.

“Not my problem.” He mutters and grabs my arm, leading me to the right pathway.

I yank out of his grasp and a low whimper leaves me. To know that Ronan is so uncaring makes me sick to my stomach and anger howls in my mind.

“That’s not right. That poor man couldn’t find the escape route and died.” I yell at him, stopping in my tracks.

His head snaps to me and madness swirls in his eyes. His fingers twitch by his side, but he keeps his tone calm as he speaks.

“When you come here you sign your life away. It’s not our problem to worry about him. We have to get out ourselves, Little Devil or do you want to cry over his poor body and die exactly how he did?” There's an unsettling break to his tone and I move my eyes from him to the man back in the center of the maze.

He’s right. If we stay here any longer we’ll end up just like him.Dead.

“That’s what I thought, let’s go.” He pulls me along by my hand. His steps are quick and ruthless against the dirt path. Each crunch heightening my nerves and making me fall in step with him just as fast.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Ronan

“In the end, he got what he wanted.”

My nerves buzz endlessly, not because I’m scared for my life. No, I could give zero damns about that. I’m scared for Ember's life.

To know we had six hours left doesn’t ease my nerves because I know those hours have flown by in this fucking maze. I’ve been walking slower for her, resting at the middle to give her legs a break, and fucking her. Yeah that part was my idea but fuck, time’s running out.

She tries her hardest to keep up with me but I know she’s sore and maybe in some type of pain from my brutal fucking.

“Here, get on my back.” I crouch down enough for her to jump.

She hesitates but her hand brushes my shoulder before her legs wrap around my waist. A tingle rushes underneath my skin but I dismiss it for now. Her breathing is shallow and loud in my ear and something tightens in my gut.

Each hedge’s leaves and jagged branches scratch against my arms as I pass through. She remains silent behind me but I can feel her heart pounding against my back. I know she’s scared but I'm here and I won’t let anything happen to her.Over my dead body.

“Try not to cry too much back there.” I try to lighten the mood because I’d rather have her attitude than this.

She huffs and it’s better than the silence that was settling between us. I continue to listen to her heart and dig through all my fucking witty remarks to try to calm it.

We come to a split and I instantly pick the right. I remember these fucking hedges like the back of my hand. It’s always right. That's the illusion of them. People think too long and pick based on panic, not with logic.

I adjust my grip on the back of her knees. “You know, they probably paid good money for that corpse, these props and sounds. I mean look at this shrubbery.”
