Once I finish, I look over at him and he has his hand extended for me, guiding me out of the truck to the ground. My legs feel weak, and I almost lose my footing, but he catches me with strong arms around my waist before his fingers grip my chin, urging me to look up at him.

“I’m sorry,” he says. “This wasn’t how I wanted to do that. Not out here. It’s not why I brought you here.”

I grip the edges of his flannel that’s still unbuttoned, lifting on my toes to press my lips to his. We both melt as he hums into my kiss.

I don’t want to stop kissing him.

I think about what Lily told me. How she said I need to assure him I plan to stay here if I want him to tell me how he’s really feeling about all of this. How I need to tell him that this isn’t a temporary home for me to escape the city life.

When I first moved here, I wasn’t sure.

Before I fell for Griffin I fell for the town charm. I knew this place was it for me.

Finding home wasn’t what I expected, but it happened.

I pull away from the kiss, smiling into his lips. “Everything was perfect, Griffin.”

“Did I officially lose the nickname?” He smirks.

I laugh, stepping out of his hold and leaning back against the bed of the truck. “I guess.” I shrug.

“Good,” he says. I open my mouth to tell him what Lily told me I should say to him, even though it feels cliché after a moment like this, but he continues. “Come to the ranch with me tomorrow,” he asks quickly.

“The ranch?”

He nods. “I want to show you something.”

“Okay, cowboy,” I say with a grin, knowing it’s the same nickname, but different.

He shakes his head in disbelief as he makes his way to the passenger door to open it for me. I don’t miss the smile on his face, even if he is trying to hide it from me.

I spend the whole drive home replaying the night in my head.

Thoughts of a possible future with the man who has one hand on the wheel and the other resting his on Reginald’s back, lightly petting him.

I want it.

I just hope like hell my past never creeps into my future.
