I want to tell him that she purred for me, that her voice, body, and song calmed me enough to keep me in the right stateof mind to avoid killing anyone else. I can’t speak. All of my willpower is going towards leaving her.

Shade allows me a few more moments of bliss before offering me his hand.

I stare at his outstretched hand.

Shade is a Beta with the heart of an Alpha. He is loyal and protective and smart. Our team would be lost without his stabilizing influence. I trust him explicitly. If he’s saying it’s time to go, I’ll go. Even if all of my instincts are screaming to never leave the Omega. Her warmth has seeped into my very bones, and I know I’ll never feel the same heat again.

Carefully, I lift her and place her on her side; the paper covering the examination table is stained in the blood coating my skin. She sighs and curls in on herself but doesn’t wake. It’s a blessing. I’m not sure if I could handle meeting her after what I did.

I take one last look at the little Omega, lingering near the door and sucking in her sweet scent to imprint it on my mind. I’ll never forget her, but I hope she’ll forget me. I’m nothing but a dead man walking. She was my stay of execution, but it’s only a matter of time.

“Thank you, Omega,” I whisper softly as I click the door closed.

Chapter Six

General Stone

We’re losing the war.

The constant attacks by the Human Conservation Alliance are wearing us down. Their methods are escalating as their military technology advances, while our ranks remain outnumbered and outgunned.

And yet, the true threat is coming from inside our borders.

Our auspicious country, forged in the face of adversity to protect and preserve the demi-human society, is cracking at the foundation.

Greed and corruption from the highest ranks have twisted the very core of what it means to be Alpha, Beta, and Omega.

The state of our great nation is despicable.

Betas are second-rate citizens and denied access to rooms where decisions are made.

Omegas are trinkets to be owned as status symbols.

Alpha offspring from coveted Alpha and Omega unions inherit the positions of power, while they send lesser Alphas to the front lines to fight a never-ending war.

Either they die in battle or Blood Lust eventually ravages them, transforming my best soldiers into mindless, violent creatures. Both end with a bullet to the head.

The fundamental fabric of our society has frayed and unraveled.

Others see the problem but lack the imagination. The solution is right there. How can they not see it?

We didn’t evolve from humans into a superior race to be hampered by the human way of life. Beyond our enhanced physical qualities, our capacity to form unbreakable bonds is the key to our survival.

The citizens see it.They know what we have taken from them with our greed.A coup is coming, and blood will run.

I will be ready. When the demi-human world is on its knees, I’ll have the solution.

And it starts with the little Omega who tamed the beast.

Chapter Seven

Halley

The stiff waiting room chair rattles as I bounce my knees and stare at the imposing wooden door. It looms before me, getting bigger by the second. I swear it’s stupidly large for the sole purpose of intimidating visitors.

It’s working. I feel small and out of my depth.

My stomach churns, and I wipe my sweaty palms on my prison-issued pants.
