My shoulders lowered. A one-off.
I hadn’t savoured it enough.
“But I think we should go back to the hotel soon. If not immediately.”
I straightened and took her hand. “You need to be our little investigator first.”
“One second,” she said and swiped at my lips with her thumb. “I like the look of you with my lipstick on.”
“I love it on my cock.”
She snorted. “Of course you do.”
Her hand fit mine perfectly, and her firm grip tugged me back to our private room. There, Livie rested her head on Nix’s shoulder, and he stroked her hair.
His second dessert of the night was half-eaten in front of him.
Livie’s smile was tired as she sipped the last drop of her wine.
I also wanted to get home.
“I heard Pedro tried to get a job at MotoBike,” Everly laughed once we had sat down and my fists flexed under the table. Fuck him. I hated his name coming out of her mouth.
We only had a few days until the end of the championship. If we were to get evidence to force the end of my contract… we were going to have to push some buttons. It didn’t help the violent hatred simmering in my chest, softened only slightly by the thought… If I did leave… what would happen between us?
Nix snorted on his drink. “Did he? Don’t see that working out for him, personally.”
“Not after shipping drugs across the world,” she laughed. “Not after prison time.”
“Not after being a fucking nonce,” I snapped, unable to help myself.
Nix and Livie’s heads snapped to me. Her eyes were wide in shock and Nix’s dessert fork clattered onto his plate. “What?” they asked together.
“Nothing,” Everly said quickly and placed her hand on top of my fist.
Neither of them moved. Nix’s eyes searched Everly’s face and Livie’s stare didn’t leave our intertwined hands on the table.
Maybe I shouldn’t have said that.
“I heard a rumour,” Everly continued, “that drugs are still being transported on the planes.”
Nix frowned and cleared his throat. “Where did you hear that?”
She shrugged again. “Around. I’ve got my suspicions.”
“You do?” Livie asked, tearing her eyes from our hands. She seemed suddenly more lively. We were silent as the staff came to collect our empty glasses. When offered more drinks, we didn’t order them, knowing without speaking that we were all going soon.
But Everly glanced around us, panicked as her time was running out.
I knew this was her plan, but I prayed when the staff left, a new topic would arise.
Nix tried to strike up a conversation about darts, but Livie only let him get four words out. “Who?”
“Well, I was wondering if Nix could help with that…”
His eyes narrowed on her.
“Well, you got your drugs from Pedro, didn’t you?” She waited for him to deny it, but he was still. Her swallow was fierce, and her blinks were frequent. She’d said so many times that Pedro couldn’t have dealt the drugs. What had made her change her mind?
