"Did he go willingly?" If Mickey had something to do with this, the Fae might have taken him.

"Oh, no," Tess said. "Were there any signs of a struggle?"

Lucky shrugged. "It would be hard to tell if there'd been a struggle in that house. It looked like a bomb had gone off in it, but it always looks like that. Mickey isn't exactly a neat kind of guy."

"Has he used his credit cards?" Tess asked. "Dallas and Austin will find that out, no problem.

"No credit cards, but they're still looking. Have you made any progress?"

Jack shook his head. "Unfortunately not. We're going to try a few things, but if we can't figure this out by Wednesday night or Thursday morning at the latest, evacuate, just in case. Take the boats to the far side of the swamp, as far away from Dead End as you can get, and wait it out."

Lucky frowned. "We'll have someone move the boats, but we're not abandoning Dead End without a fight. We've got your back. Always."

"Where's Molly, Lucky? I haven't heard from her," Tess said, sounding worried.

Lucky glanced down at his phone. "Um, you might want to check your phone. She says she's been trying to call you for the past half hour."

She blushed. It was adorable and made me want to kiss her again.

"Yes. Um, we dropped our phones," she mumbled, before pulling her hand out of mine and hopping out of the truck to retrieve them.

"Okay. I've got to go. I just thought I'd take a chance that you'd be here, since I was passing by on my way to go to the bank," Lucky said. "I need to be sure our account is in order and we can transfer it to a bank outside Dead End if worse comes to worst."

Tess leaned in, handed me my phone, and groaned. "I didn't even think of that. I'd better get to the bank soon, too. Thanks, Lucky. I'll have Aunt Ruby put a reminder on the town text blast for everyone to do that."

"Good idea. Okay, see you two later." He grinned at us. "Try to stay out of trouble."

Tess blushed again. But I just grinned, and Lucky drove off. I climbed out of the car and walked around the truck to catch Tess before she got in her car. Sadly, she didn't let me kiss her for very long.

"Jack! I need to … I have to … I, what?" She gave me a dazed look, and I felt like the king of the world.

I kissed her again, but she winced and put a hand to her temple. That freaking headache again.

"Please drop me back at my shop to get my car."

"Are you sure you're okay to drive?"

"Yes, but I'm going to go take a nap and some medicine," she said, suddenly pale. "I don't understand this, and I don't like it. If I don't feel better in the morning, I really will go see a doctor, no matter what. I can't think clearly when this acts up."

"I think I may have had something to do with you not thinking clearly, not to brag."

She laughed, touching the pendant I'd given her. "Yes, you definitely did. Come over for dinner?"

"I will. I'll bring pizza. It will make Jed happy. Please drive safely. We'll figure this out, I promise."

We drove to her shop, mostly silent but grinning goofy grins at each other, until I pulled up next to her car. She kissed me goodbye—on the cheek—and dodged away when I tried to grab her for more. I let her go, still smiling.

She loved me.

She wasin lovewith me.

Queen Viviette didn't know what she was up against.

After the short drive back to my house, I went inside, got out the whiteboard, and started making lists of allies, and then I picked up the phone. First call: the King's Vengeance of Atlantis, otherwise known as High Prince "call me Your Majesty, and I'll kick your ass" Ven.

My friend.

"Hey, kitty cat," he answered the phone. "Out of tuna? When are you going to bring that lovely lady to visit me and Erin again?"
