“Yes sir,” Elvira said. A part of her was relieved too. She didn’t want some criminal searching for Brina in the guest house where she lived. But she would have helped Brina anyway. From the moment she saw her, she knew she was a good person. She just knew it. That was why she took a chance on her and hired her on instead of all those other maids the various employment agencies had sent to her.

“You two can call it a night,” Ronny said to Elvira and James.

They both thanked the boss and then were surprised when Ronny placed his arm on Brina’s lower back as he escorted her into the mansion. They even looked at each other with adid you see thatlook on their faces. But they’d been in service nearly all their lives. They knew how to see things, and not see a thing. They went to their respective residences onsite as Ronny walked Brina to his private elevator inside the mansion, and rode them up to his private floor, the fourth floor, with his hand still protectively planted on her back.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The SUV pulled to the curb in the back of an abandoned bus depot and Kaiser Grant and Drez Wilburn got in on the backseat. Joe Mosley, the boss, was seated on the front passenger seat with his Yorkshire Terrier on his lap. “I don’t see the girl with you,” he said as he rubbed his puppy’s well-groomed black mane. “Where’s the girl?”

Drez and Kaiser exchanged a glance, and then Kaiser, who hired Drez, answered the boss. “She got away.”

Mosley quickly turned around and looked at Kaiser. “Are you shitting me?” His voice bore no pretense to his earlier calmness. “How could she get away? You said Drez was waiting for her in her apartment. How could she get away?”

Kaiser looked at Drez. “Tell him.”

Drez was frightened, but he spoke up. “That rich guy, that Bradshaw, was with her when she came home.”

“He went to that rathole apartment with her?”

“Yes sir. And he had security with him, too. It was like four people jumping me all at once.”

He glanced at Kaiser. They both knew he was lying. It was only Ronny Bradshaw, and nobody else “jumping” him.

“I had to fight off four people,” Drez continued. “I would have had to shoot him and his bodyguards, too, to get her out of there. Probably would have shot her in the chaos. And then the cops were coming too? I had no choice but to get out of there, Boss. It was a wonder I got out alive.”

Kaiser nodded. It was a good embellishment. “He had no choice, Boss.”

Mosley turned around. “I want that bitch in my possession. You hear me, Drez?”

Drez nodded. “Yes sir.”

“By hook or by crook, I want that bitch. If you have to hire ten more men, you hire them. Am I making myself clear to you?”

“Yes, sir, Mr. Mosley. And don’t worry, I’ll get her.”

“And from now on you answer directly to me. No middle man. Understood?”

Drez glanced at Kaiser, but nodded his head. “Yes, sir. Understood.”

Mosley exhaled. “You may leave,” he said.

Drez gladly got out of that SUV and began hurrying away.

Mosley stared at Kaiser. He removed the gun that was sitting beneath his puppy and pointed it directly at Kaiser.

Kaiser’s eyes stretched when he saw that gun. “What are you doing, Boss? You heard what Drez said. Four men jumped him.”

“Bullshit! You think I believe that crap?”

“That’s what he said!” Kaiser said it more hysterically than he had planned to say it.

“Remember what I said?” Mosley asked him. “You think I was joking when I told you what would happen to you if you didn’t deliver that bitch to me?”

Kaiser was trying to explain himself, to reiterate that Drez did the best he could, but he knew he was not persuasive. Mosley wasn’t hearing it.

He tried to open the door and jump out, but Mosley began firing.

Drez stopped and turned around when he heard the gunshots. And when Mosley’s driver got out and threw Kaiser’s bloodied body out of the SUV and then stood there staring at Drez, as if to remind him what fate would befall him if he didn’t deliver, Drez turned back around and began running. He didn’t stop running until he had hopped into his car and sped away. He didn’t know how he was going to do it, but he had to get thatbitch and he had to get her now or it would be his bloodied body next. That much he knew.
