“J.D. was waiting out in the parking lot for me,” Quar explained as he tugged Forest over.
It felt right to beat Quar’s side.
“He chose an inopportune time to show up. I was kissing my sub—” He smiled at Forest.
Forest was almost giddy with that claim. He smiled so big his cheeks ached.
“And he attacked us. Threw Forest down and came at me. I had to defend my boy,” Quar said.
Forest moved a little closer to him, until they were touching side to side, and Quar slipped his arm around Forest’s waist.
“You beat him up, right?” Bo cracked his knuckles. “I wouldn’t mind teaching him how to behave.”
“Cops have been called.” Quar looked at Brant. “Are you okay?”
Brant nodded. “He didn’t try to contact me or anything. I’m not worried he’ll bother me. He wasn’t interested in me the other night, just a body to hurt.”
Quar spoke with his friends for a few more minutes, then he took Forest to hisoffice. “The police will be here soon.”
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Quar called out.
Ted stuck his head in after he opened the door. “Ice?”
“Yes, thank you.” Quar sighed as Forest took the bag and helped him place it on his hand. “Ibuprofen wouldn’t be off the mark. Could you get the bottle of it off the shelf behind you?”
“If you have to go to the urgent care—” Forest began.
Quar waved the idea off. “No, I’ll be fine. Nothing feels wonky and I can bend my fingers.”
Forest retrieved the pain reliever and checked Quar’s hand. “It doesn’t look like it’s swelling anymore.”
Quar chuckled. “I think it was just in shock from making contact with J.D.’s jaw.”
“Maybe,” Forest conceded. Before he could say anything else, there was another knock on Quar’s door, then Boannouncing that the police were there.
Forest settled on the cushion he placed by Quar’s feet as the cops entered the room. He knew where his place was. It was at Quar’s side.
