Lynx shook his head. “No.”
“What’s the issue?” Adam asked.
“Issue with what?” Lynx responded.
“Why haven’t you put forth more effort to lock Fateema down?” Adam continued but got no answer.
“How long has it been?” Joaquin asked when Lynx didn’t respond to Adam.
“What do you mean?”
“How long has it been since you and Fateema crossed the line from friends to lovers?”
“We talked about this years ago when we were all home for break.”
“Oh, yeah. I remember,” Adam said.
“Prom night,” Joaquin added.
“After all that shit that went down with Rodney at prom, we picked up some burgers and shakes and took them back to the treehouse. One thing led to another, and the next thing I knew, we were no longer virgins.”
“Hold up. You both were virgins?” Joaquin clarified, and Lynx nodded. “Damn, I figured she was, but you too?”
“I’d had my dick sucked by a few girls but hadn’t had sex. We were each other’s firsts.”
“Wow. I had no idea. However, that shit was over ten years ago. Is there something you aren’t saying?” Adam pressed.
Lynx didn’t respond because there was a lot he wasn’t saying.
“Do you love her?” Joaquin asked when Lynx didn’t respond.
“With everything in me.”
“How do you think you’d feel if she fell in love with someone else?” Joaquin pressed.
“I’d probably crash out.”
“Then it sounds like you have a decision to make. Fateema has had it with you. If you want her, you’ll have to prove it,” Joaquin advised.
“Or you’ll have to let her go so she can find happiness with someone else,” Ryan commented.
“I don’t think I can let her go. She’s home to me.”
“I get it. Y’all have a lot of history, but this stronghold you have on her isn’t fair, man. You have to love her how she needs and wants to be loved, or let someone else do it,” Adam advised.
Lynx thought about the advice from his friends and tried to imagine his life without Fateema or watching her love someone else. The thought made him sick, so he knew he had to get his shit together to get his woman… permanently.
Chapter 13
Flashback – The Last Day of High School
“Did you really agree to go to prom with that asshole?” Octavia asked Fateema.
“He’s never been anything but nice to me, and you know I’ve been crushing on him since the first time I saw him on the track freshman year. Hell yeah, I agreed to go to prom with him.”
“He only asked you because Tati broke up with him because she caught him cheating,” Meaghan said.
It was the last day of school for seniors, and the three of them were at the mall to do some last-minute shopping for prom and graduation. Prom would be held the upcoming Friday, and graduation was Sunday, two days later. They’d just gotten food from the food court and sat down to eat.
