Maybe sleeping on the couch would be better.
Zoe nods. “I did, but she didn’t pick up. I’m going to call her again in the morning and see what she knows.”
“And you think she’s going to be willing to help my family?” I roll onto my side and tuck an arm beneath my head, looking at her.
She mimics me. “I told you, this wasn’t my family. She has no reason to refuse to help if it has nothing to do with us.”
“Thank you.”
Zoe grins and leans in, her lips brushing over mine. “I’m going to help however I can. I hope you know that.”
“I don’t trust it.”
“Then trust in this right here.” She nestles into my chest, pressing her head into my shoulder. “I’m going to do everything I can to help you.”
I loop my arm around her, holding her against me.
More than anything, I would like to believe her.
I wish I didn’t think there was an ulterior motive to her helping me. I wish we could be just another couple.
But we’re not.
And there was something off about her voice when she promised to help me.
Chapter Twenty
ZOE
“You’ve got to be kidding.”Morgana scoffs. “There’s no way that you’re going to spend another week in that shithole. You can’t. The boss is getting angry.”
I start jogging on the treadmill, needing to do something to let the jittery feeling off my body. “The boss can fuck off. He doesn’t get to dictate what’s going on right now. Not when there are things I have to take care of here.”
“You need to watch yourself. If I didn’t know any better, I would say there’s something more going on there.”
My heart plummets to my feet, and I stumble on the treadmill, grabbing the rails hard and hopping off before I have the chance to fall on my face. “There’s nothing else going on here.”
Morgana laughs. “I know there isn’t. You’re a stone-cold bitch in the best way possible. And you’re going to do everything you can to swing this in your favor. I just wonder about it, sometimes. I mean, wouldn’t you, if I were in the same position?”
“I suppose.” I get back on the treadmill, slowing down to a fast walk. “But I don’t want to talk about that right now.”
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Not here. They’re going to let me out of the house. I want to meet at a restaurant in an hour.”
“Holy shit, they’re letting you go out on your own?” Morgana laughs and claps. “You’re going to have to tell me how you managed that one. Especially when Aiden Lynde is known for being a son of a bitch.”
“Look, you fuck a man enough and he’s going to start giving you some freedom that he didn’t before.” I feel horrible just saying the words, like my entire body is ripping in half.
As much as I may not want to admit it, Aiden is coming to mean something to me.
Everything I’ve been doing doesn’t sit as well as it used to. Now, it just feels like I’m waiting for my life to implode, and I’m going to lose one of the few people who mean anything to me.
That much was obvious when I was in bed with him the other night.
Morgana clicks her tongue. “I applaud your skills. And I looked into the body left on the doorstep. You were right about who was behind it.”
“Great.” I stop the treadmill and hop off. “That’s just what I need.”
