She sat up, eyes closed. I propped myself on my elbow and handed her the phone. She cracked open an eyelid. Shock crossed her face before disgust. “She’smarryinghim?”

She tapped away on the screen. Clover and Elijah had waited a year, long enough that Poppy hoped the relationship wouldn’t go anywhere, thinking that Elijah must not want to marry for the house. I was surprised he wanted to marry at all. It’d require him to think about more than himself.

“I can’t believe it.” She blinked at me, and her phone buzzed. She frowned. “She claims she’s not marrying for the house. He’s branching out on his own, and she wants to as well.”

“Think they waited so it didn’t seem suspicious to Linda?”

“Maybe. I don’t like it.”

I wrapped an arm around her. “She’ll be fine. Whatever happens, she’ll land on her feet.”

“And maybe the flake won’t be there when she does.”

“He does flake on her a lot.”

Poppy couldn’t talk to Clover without hearing a story about some way “The Douche” let her down, only Clover talked about getting ditched or stood up like it was just another Monday.

“I wish she’d find someone who treats her better.”

“She will. I never thought I would. Then you hung up as soon as you could on an online tutoring session when you saw it was me.”

She flashed me a mischievous grin. “I checked you out first.”

“Only ’cause you saw me first. Now I check you out the most.”

She chuckled, then grimaced at the screen and set it aside. “That mess will have to wait.”

“But we’re going?”

She nodded. “She’ll need me.” She curled around me until we formed a ying-yang with our torsos. “Like I’ll need you.”

“You’ve got me all day, every day, four-ten.”

“Forever, Hollis.”

I smiled. My last name was now hers. Forever.
