“Okay.Wait just a minute.”

I take the phone and head back into the bedroom.I nudge Jason gently.“Jason?”

No response.

He’s really out.

I nudge him harder and raise my voice.“Jason.”

He responds, one eye opening.“Angie? You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“You sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.”He must be feeling guilty about earlier.“I’m so sorry to wake you, but there’s a Tom Chapman on the phone. He says he has some information that you’ll want and that it can’t wait.”

Jason rubs sleep out of his eyes.“Tom who?”

“Chapman?”

His look of confusion morphs into wide eyes.“Fuck.Okay, yeah.”He grabs the phone from me.

“Tom?”

Pause.

“Fuck, that’s great.Hold on, say that again.”Jason takes the phone away from his ear and begins typing.“Got it,” he says, phone back at his ear.

Pause.

“Not a problem.I’m glad you woke me.I’ll get on this right away.”

After he ends the call, I look at him, my eyebrows raised.I won’t ask.He has to tell me.

But he doesn’t offer any information.Instead he jumps out of bed and begins tossing on his clothes.

Seriously?He’s leaving?It’s nearly midnight.

What does he expect to accomplish at this hour?

He kisses me on the cheek.“I have to go.I’ll call you.”

Then he leaves.

I follow him.Lock the door behind him.Grab Tillie and snuggle her close.

He’s gone.No explanation—just the ghost of his presence and the lingering scent of him on my skin.

I trust him.

But trust doesn’t feel like this—like an open wound.

Like the sound of a door closing and no promise that it will open again.
