My hands fall to my robe, and I brush them off. I’ll wash them as soon as I return home. I don’t want any of his vile residue on me.

“Levi?” a male voice calls out from quite some distance away.

My head tilts, and I scan the area for any heat signatures.

The same name is called by another individual much closer, and my eyes narrow. Apparently he has friends who are searching for him.

Too bad they weren’t around to stop him from doing something vile.

Spinning around, I barely catch sight of an angel as he swoops through the trees.

 Shit.

 I have to go.

My eyes close as I turn myself invisible to the naked eye.

Perhaps I should stick around to verify if they’re monsters like their friend…

 No, one angel was manageable.

 More than that?

I truly have no idea what would happen. If it becomes necessary to handle them, I’ll pick them off one by one.

Focusing my intent, I siphon home.

 Chapter One

 Hazel

Being hunted by two sentinels and an angel isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. That night in the forest, I attracted the wrong kind of attention.

Angels are nothing if not persistent, and the one who’s hunting me seems more determined than most. The only upside is that while he might know how to track my soul vibration when I’m transformed into my monster, he seems completely unable to sense me when I’m in human form.

That fucking angel and his sentinel lackeys have chased me all over the world for the last few months. It’s gotten so bad that I have to hurry every time I eat a meal, and as soon as I’m done, I have to immediately siphon away. Jumping again and again to attempt to leave a false trail. Even with taking additional steps to stay off their radar, it hasn’t worked completely.

The sanctuary city I grew up in, Haven, became a heavy point of their focus, and my family agreed it was time for me to leave. At least long enough for those feathered jerks to move on to somewhere new.

Black Cove became the perfect sanctuary town for me to settle in. My old babysitter, Greer, moved here after an incident with her boyfriend. When she first got to town, she lived ina house that she inherited from her grandmother. But shortly after arriving, she met her mates, which left Granny Rollins’s house completely unoccupied.

It was a fortuitous turn of events because I needed a place to stay.

Greer might be a few years older than I am, but we’re both adults, and I’d like to think we’ve become friends.

I need at least one friend in Black Cove.

Originally, I hoped my twin would come with me, but after a lifetime of being glued together, it was probably time for us to learn how to stand on our own.

 It’s hard, though.

I miss Violet so badly that my soul aches.

Before I came to Black Cove, we had never been apart for more than a day during our entire lives. The physical distance is hard, but the most jarring part is not being able to sense her—at least not to the level I’m used to.

Violet begged our parents for her own room for years. They gave in once we turned eleven. She was content having her own space. I, however, was so lonely not being able to listen to her heartbeat as she fell asleep that I used to stare at the wall separating our rooms. I would focus on her soul vibration to reassure me that she was okay.

 And this is even worse.
