“I don’t think it’s ever peaches and roses.”

“Maybe when they’re all asleep?”

She laughed. “I’m usually asleep too at that point.”

“Yes, but the idea is nice.”

She laughed again and nodded. Funny that the man could come in here and have her laughing. Maybe that was what convinced her. Maybe it was the idea that they didn’t have to take things seriously, and he wasn’t going to get anxious and upset. Demand things. But instead they could find humor in things.

“Do you like to laugh?” she asked, knowing it was a stupid, sappy question, but one that seemed really important. In fact, maybe it was the most important question after whether or not he was a Christian, but she knew he went to church, she knew he professed Christ, so any more than that only God could see in his heart. She would have to take him at his word.

“I think it’s important. Sometimes I’m not sure how people get through their days without laughter.”

“All right then, my answer is yes.”

Chapter Five

Wilson blinked.

Just like that? Her answer was yes?

His lips started curving up, and he didn’t even try to stop them. He didn’t want to appear like he was celebrating exactly, but maybe it wouldn’t hurt for her to know that he was happy that she said yes.

“Are you sure?” he asked, still smiling.

“I think with God and with laughter, we can do it. I’m not sure there’s any other way.”

“I think it’s gonna take a lot of hard work. We probably ought not to gloss over that part.”

“That’s true. God, laughter, and hard work.”

“Faith, family, and fun. That has a better ring to it.”

“It does.” She nodded and then looked at him, questions in her eyes. “All right. Where do we go from here?”

He took a deep breath. He hadn’t really gotten any further than this and the general idea that he wanted to get married before Christmas. Or maybe on Christmas. “Do we need to wait?”

“Not for me. I’m ready, if you think this is what the Lord wants you to do, and I don’t think He’s going to drop a better offer into my lap, so I say as soon as you can, let’s do it.”

“All right then. I’ll have to see what we need, but I’m pretty sure we just need to go and get a license, and then we can get married anytime.”

“How soon are you looking at?”

He didn’t want to scare her, but he figured he might as well be honest. “Tomorrow? The day after?”

“That’s Christmas Eve, Christmas.”

“Is there a problem with that?”

She drew back a bit as though surprised, blinked, and then said, “I guess not. Actually, I think if you want to get married on Christmas, we might not find someone who’s willing to perform the ceremony.”

“I’ll see what I can do about that,” he said, knowing that the pastor would marry them whenever. He’d already spoken to the pastor about what he was considering, and the pastor couldn’t find any verses in the Bible against it. In fact, as he and the pastor had talked together, the pastor couldn’t find any verses in the Bible to back up that a couple should be in love before they got married. He didn’t need to change anyone’s mind, but he did think that maybe modern society had permeated into the church and now the church believed something that wasn’t necessarily biblical.

“All right. Then…was that everything?” she asked with a little laugh as though knowing as soon as she said that that the little bit he had said was a lot.

“That’s it for now. Although, I hate leaving you. I… You can definitely use some help.” He had no idea how she worked around the chaos. Maybe she waited for the kids to go down for their naps, but like she said, he was thinking as soon as the kids went down, he would want to take a nap.

“It’s okay. I’m used to it. And I’ve got some work to do anyway.”
