Then there was the moment with Evan. He was right, he did cross a line…and she wouldn’t mind doing it again. Maybe even going further. When her hands were on his chest, she could feel how muscular he was, and strong. His heart had been thudding. Didn’t that mean he was into the kiss too? That only shook Mckenna up more. She’d never been this drawn to someone. It wasn’t just his looks. Despite the office watercooler gossip, Agent Evan Knox had a soft side and he cared. Somehow, she felt safe with him. She wanted to get to know him better.
Or so she thought, because then he’d apologized for kissing her. Like he’d only done it because he felt sorry for her. Mckenna didn’t know what to think. She just wanted this day to be done so she could go home, sit out on her porch that overlooked the mountains, sip on a glass of wine and forget about everything that had happened. She could start over tomorrow.
Mckenna parked, let Mocha out of the car and went inside, glad for the air-conditioning since the day had turned hot. Hopefully, the monsoon rains would start soon and then at least some clouds would move in along with some rain to cool things off. She wouldn’t have to worry about Mocha in the car or hispaws burning on the pavement. But she wasn’t in any hurry to shovel snow.
She and Mocha turned a corner and ran into Cassidy, who immediately narrowed her eyes.
“What’s up?” her sister asked. “You’ve been crying. I can tell.”
“Nothing,” Mckenna lied. She didn’t even know where to start. The similarities between the kidnappings? Lily speaking again? Kissing Evan and liking it? Okay, not just liking it, loving it and desiring more, but then knowing that he would probably be cordial and on his best behavior since he believed he’d crossed a line. Yeah, she didn’t even want to start discussing everything.
“I don’t believe you.”
“Well, then don’t. I have work to do, Cass. I need to get going.” Mckenna hated being that way with her sister, but she had to get to her office and away from everyone.
“Was he an asshole?” Cassidy asked, eyes narrowed again.
“Who? Evan?”
“Evan? Since when did you start calling him Evan? What’s going on?”
“He told me to call him Evan and nothing is going on,” Mckenna said. “Please, I need to get some work done and then go home and relax. It’s been a long day. Don’t you have work to do too? Aren’t you working that big case with the serial bomber or something?”
Cassidy sighed. “Okay, but call me later. I can tell something’s up and I’ll get it out of you. I’m an FBI agent after all.”
“I’ll call,” Mckenna promised. She and Mocha made it to her office and Mckenna closed the door, flopping down into her chair and taking a deep breath. She closed her eyes, thinking about her breathing and working on calming techniques she’d learned after her trauma. It was hard to focus, though, becauseall she could think about was him. When her phone pinged, interrupting her thoughts, Mckenna didn’t mind.
Until she saw who the message was from—Evan.
Meet me for coffee? I have some questions.
At least he’d included a smiley face emoji.
Sure. Where?
How about your usual?
How do you know my usual? Mckenna typed back.
I see you almost every day with a cup from there. Plus, there’s shade for Mocha.
He noticed? He was an FBI agent. Of course he noticed.
Okay, what time?
I’ll be there in about twenty minutes. You want a mocha to go with your Mocha?
Mckenna laughed. Then she typed backI’m more of a latte girl, but don’t tell Mocha that. See you in a bit.
Her stomach had butterflies. No one had made her laugh like that in a long time. The thought of meeting him outside the office made her nervous, but not because he was gruff and a lone wolf like the office gossips discussed. Mckenna assumed Evan only wanted to see her to get information about the kidnapping. Nothing more. But she was falling hard for the good-looking agent—she just didn’t want to fully admit it.
A few minutes later, Mckenna and Mocha pulled up to the coffee shop. She’d managed to avoid Cassidy on the way out. And her boss. If she didn’t start getting her work done soon for her other cases, her boss wasn’t going to be happy.
Mckenna’s heart skipped a beat when she saw Evan sitting out front, coffees on the table in the shade and a bowl of water for Mocha along with a soft blanket for him to lie on instead of the concrete. Yes, there was another side to Evan. She was liking it more and more.
Evan stood when he saw her coming. He ran his hands through his hair trying to tame the waves that Mckenna had come to love. She’d love to run her fingers through his hair, but he only did this when he was nervous or stressed. She stopped in front of him but didn’t get close enough for a hug…or another kiss.
Evan motioned with his hand for her to take a seat across from him and then he sat down. He had circles under his eyes and appeared tired. She knew he’d had a hard day too, from questioning Lily to comforting Mckenna.
