“You’re a player,” she narrows her eyes at me.
“Not that I know anything about your business, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to have Mrs. Wolfe wait for a reply,” I say, jerking my chin to her phone.
“You’re impossible.”
“Once again, I have no idea what you’re talking about, dumpling,” my grin is wider than it was before.
She grabs her iPhone and taps a few times. The next thing I know, her phone rings.
“Oh, my God, it’s her,” she whispers, pointing at her phone. Her eyes are huge. “She’s calling me.”
“You should answer,” I whisper back.
She gets up and does this happy dance before walking to the other side of the deck.
I don’t have much time to enjoy the moment.
My phone rings.
I grab it from the tray where it’s still sitting.
When I recognize the name, I immediately answer the call.
“Lazarus,” I say.
“Loki,” he says. “Am I catching you at a bad time?”
“No. I’m done for the day. Kyla and I are just sitting on the deck, enjoying a drink.”
“I’m afraid I’m about to put a kink in your evening.”
“I’m listening.”
“This is too sensitive for a phone conversation. I’ve already briefed my guys. Two of them will stay behind and two of them will drive you to the Quintus Hotel. Larkin already knows what’s going on. He’s having one of the conference rooms prepped as we speak. I’ll be there. So will the owners of Falcon Crest––they insisted on being present.”
“Lazarus, this doesn’t sound too good.”
“With traffic, the trip should take you two hours,” he says, bypassing my concern.
I try a different angle. “Did you get a lead or did things take a nosedive?”
“Like I said, I can’t go over it on the phone. You’ll get a complete briefing when you get here.”
God dammit.
