CHAPTER 31
Kyla
“Stand back!” a voice yells. “I said stand back!”
What?
I’m teetering between sleep and consciousness.
“You cross that gate and you’ll be asking for it!” another voice yells.
“What’s going on?” Loki grumbles.
“Umm-hmm.” That’s the best I can do. I’m too exhausted to respond.
The stress of the last four days weigh heavy on my shoulders, rendering me nearly comatose by the time I finally fall asleep.
“Don’t you fucking speak English, asshole?” another voice––more commanding––yells. “Didn’t you hear what I said?”
Why so much yelling? People have no respect.
“Is she in there?” someone shouts.
“Hey, you over there, get back here!” the commanding voice yells again.
“You’re trespassing on private property. Don’t make me get ugly on your ass,” I vaguely recognize the voice that first spoke.
“Whatever you do to me will be recorded for the whole world to see!” someone shouts. “#PoliceBrutalityIsReal!”
“Too bad for you I’m former SEAL and not a police officer, you idiot,” the commanding voice sneers.
“A princess can hide behind the fortress walls of her ritzy castle, but that can only last so long!” a woman shouts. “The people have a right to know!”
“The people have a right to know!” a crowd chants, following the woman’s cue.
Why is there so much commotion?
“Kyla, baby, wake up,” Loki coaxes, gently shaking me.
“Huh?”
“Wake up,” he repeats. This time he shakes me harder.
“It’s too early,” I grumble. “What time is it anyway?” I ask, my eyes still closed.
“It’s six o’clock.”
“Why are the neighbors being so annoying?”
“I think we have a situation on our hands.”
I flip over. “What are you talking about?”
I’m awake now.
“It sounds like––”
The chuff of a helicopter flying above our heads startles us both. The hard scream of the blades seem too close for comfort.
