I blush a deep crimson, grimacing at my computer screen as I sink deeper into my office chair. So this is gonna be a thing between us now? Him teasing me about my mistake? I sigh. Still, though, I won’t let him distract me from what’s going on. Because if it’s work related, I absolutely understand. Plus, his comment and the way he phrased what’s frustrating him is confirmation enough that he must be a little minion just like me, puttering about, trying to survive every day. So there’s no way I’m letting him off the hook that easy.

Nice deflection.

And yes. I am excited.

What’s going on over there?

I’m not deflecting. But these are corporate email accounts. And I don’t want either of us to get in trouble for talking.

I’m sorry I said those things and made you worry. But I’m totally fine I promise. Maybe it’s best if we go back to our regularly scheduled professional relationship.

God.

I squeeze my eyes shut and bite my lip, feeling bad. He isn’t wrong about getting in trouble for using the company emails for this, but for some reason it feels wrong to just let this go. Like I’d be breaking some unspoken junior employee/minion support group code. I mean, what kind of person would I be if I just left things like that, knowing that this guy is having a hard time? What if his boss is just as ogre-like as mine?

I take a deep breath and murmur “Don’t make me regret this” before replying with my personal email.

In just under a minute, I refresh my personal email and find a new message:

Hey.

WILL

It was just a one word email, but something about it felt monumental.

Hey.

A simple hello, three letters, one syllable.

It feels like the beginning of something big.

And honestly, thank god for that.
