After a snack from Goldie, the lights cut off, and I drifted to sleep until I heard our cell opening.

“Dixon. Let’s go. Medical.”

“Ain’t no fuckin’ medical this time of night!” Goldie yelled, heightening my anxiety.

“Be quiet, Temple!” he fussed, pointing at her before looking at me, “Let’s go. Now!”

He practically pulled me from my cot, ushering me into the hallway, slamming the cell shut.

“Where are you taking her!” Goldie yelled, clinging to the bars separating us.

“Why am I going to medical?” I asked, turning to get his name from his uniform.

“Don’t know. They told me to get you. That’s what I’m doing.”

“Who are they?” I asked, but he didn’t answer.

My stomach dropped, fearing the worst, especially after Winston’s visit.

The officer reassured me I’d be fine, but I wasn’t sure. The room was dark as fuck. A woman dressed in scrubs pointed me to the phone with no explanation.

The relief from Treason’s voice almost knocked me off my feet, “Blue.”

“Jesus! You almost gave me a fuckin’ heart attack, Tre.”

“My bad. I needed to hear you. Make sure you’re holding together.”

“I’m . . .” I couldn’t finish the sentence because saying okay would be a lie. I wanted to come home, but for now, I was managing. “I thought something bad was about to happen.”

“I’m always here, even when you can’t see me. I need you to know that.”

My lids closed, creating a picture of Treason’s tortured expression. He was likely in his office, sitting behind his desk. No, he was standing at the oversized window behind it, overlooking the city separating us.

“I’m sorry about earlier.”

“I’msorry, Blue,” he stalled for a second, “For everything. Goldie lookin’ out for you though, right?”

“Yeah, she has snacks,” I chuckled for the first time in days, “No gummy bears though.”

“Your fat ass needs those.”

“Yeah, I do. The food in here sucks. I want a whole bag of green ones.”

“I’ll make some calls and see what I can do.”

“I love you,Stink.” Treason needed to know he wasn’t fighting a losing battle. Most of all, he needed to know I believed in him because he wasn’t operating on his own strength right now. He needed mine.

“I love you more, Blue. One way or another, you’re coming home,” he reminded me with so much conviction I slept like a baby when I got to my cell.

Chapter 24

Peeling myself out of bed, I threw on some clothes and walked down the hall where Rayven was kicked back on the couch with her laptop on her stomach.

“Morning.”

“Hey, Tre.”

“I’m under strict orders to take care of you. Are you hungry?”
