Even though I would have no qualms about dragging this man into the back seat of this SUV right now, I know that’s not where his mind is at. That’s not what he’s looking for.
Hell, I doubt thiskissis actually what he was interested in, even though he allowed his baser instincts to kick in when our faces were mere centimeters apart.
Which is why I slow us down, nibble on his lip just slightly, stroke my hand up and down his chest, and then weave it into his hair to scratch at his scalp.
I feel a tremor run through him, and when I do, I pull back slightly. When he finally opens his eyes to look at me, I know slowing us down was the right call.
His eyes are wide, and though I don’t doubt his interest or excitement, I can see nervousness there as well. Perhaps even surprise at his own actions.
“Well that wasn’t exactly what I’d planned,” he says, giving me a grin that is equal parts enjoyment and apology.
“Do you regret it?” I ask, my voice quiet as I wait for him to tell me the one thing that will determine my next move.
Thankfully, he shakes his head. Shakes it then leans in to place on my lips a much more chaste kiss than the one we just exchanged seconds ago.
“I should, but I don’t,” he tells me.
“Why should you regret it?” I ask.
He sighs but doesn’t pull away. His thumb idly strokes along the back of my neck, sending scattered goose bumps along my spine and down my arms.
“It just happened so quickly. Like I couldn’t help it and…” He shrugs. “I just assumed I would be more in control than that when I finally decided to initiate something.”
I lick my lips and shake my own head. “But don’t you see?” I whisper. “That’s the kind of connection we have.”
Reaching up, I use my thumb to wipe off the bit of lipstick that is now coloring his lips with a faint hint of peach.
“I want you to feel out of control with me,” I continue. “Almost shocked by your own actions because you’re so into me you can’t help it.”
His brow furrows. “You do?”
I nod. “Absolutely. I know what I said at the hospital was a lot to take in, but this is what I’m talking about. Seeing you so riled up and trying to control yourself but not being able to keep yourself from grabbing me and pressing your lips to mine?” I let out a soft sigh. “God, it turns me on.”
Logan’s lips curve again and his head tilts to the side, almost like he’s considering me in a way he hadn’t before.
“Forgive me,” he says. “This is all just…very different than what…I mean, it’s all just…” He trails off, his eyes dropping to my lips again.
“Do exactly what you want,” I whisper. “Right now. This second.”
His fingers flex around my neck but he doesn’t move, almost like he considered tugging me close to him again but couldn’t force his own uncertainty to move forward with it.Then his hand releases me and he pulls back, settling against his seat even as his eyes stay on mine.
I nibble on my lip, trying not to be disappointed.
Slow and steady, I remind myself again.
Glancing around, I spot his phone resting on the console between us.
“How about this,” I tell him, grabbing his phone and opening it to the contacts. “I’m going to take your number, and you’re going to take mine. We can talk about tonight soon, once you’ve had a chance to think it over. How does that sound?”
Logan blinks then nods, watching as I enter my number. Then I hit call, and when his number pops up on my screen, I enter his contact details.
“There,” I say, placing his phone in the cup holder. I lean across the console so my face is close to his again. “Thanks for the ride,” I tell him.
This time, I really do just press my lips against the corner of his mouth and pull back, knowing pushing any further might push him right out of my life.
“And Logan?” I say once I’ve slipped out of the front seat of his SUV and I’m standing next to it with the door open.
His eyes lock on mine.
