“Oh, and what is that?” I ask.
I shouldn’t care what she has to say. Idon’tcare, actually, but I can’t miss an opportunity to best her at her own game, and I have a pretty good feeling I know what’s coming my way.
Krissa bats her eyelashes and looks at me with eyes that say she knows I want her.
She couldn’t be more wrong.
“You’re trying to replace me.”
I laugh.
“You’re laughing at me, but it’s true. I know it is because I know how you looked at me, and that’s not how you look at her.Remmy Wallace.”
She says Remmy’s name like it’s dirty, drawing out the S sound at the end like it’s gum she’s trying to wipe off her shoe against the pavement.
“Krissa, I know it’s hard for you to grasp, but the world doesnotrevolve around you.”
Her eyes narrow.
“My dad may have decided you were worth ruining his life for, but I could not be more thankful that he showed me your true colors.”
She gasps. “Mine!? You act like I was working alone. Your dad came afterme, not the other way around.”
“I know, but I already knew my dad was a selfish asshole. You, on the other hand…youI didn’t see coming. And that was my own fault.”
I lean close to Krissa, reaching down and tugging lightly on some of the hair extensions she wears now, my face inches from hers.
She’s a cheap imitation of what I know I truly want, even if I doubt I’ll ever allow myself to have it.
“I don’t forgive people who try to manipulate me for their own gain,” I whisper, giving her a smile that’s nothing but shark teeth.
She looks furious.
I shouldn’t want to waste my energy on her. Usually I don’t, but there is something so wonderful about thinking of exactly the right thing to say at exactly the right time, especially when it’s directed at someone who sent an earthquake through the foundation of your life.
Krissa was that person in mine. Not my father.
Like I said, I’ve always known who he was.
I just never realized his sons were fair game.
Leaning back, I give her a smug grin, appreciating the moment for exactly what it is. Until the door next to where we’re standing opens and Remmy appears, seemingly startled by our presence in the hallway.
“Oh, hey,” she says. Then her eyes flit back and forth between us, taking in our close stance, assessing.
“Just wishing my Bennie here some additional congratulations,” Krissa says, her voice dropping into something sultry and sensual.
My nostrils flare and I turn to face Remmy fully, hoping I can convince her with my eyes that she doesn’t have anything—anything—to worry about when it comes to Krissa.
“You know, that issosweet of you,” she says, a smile crawling onto her face.
I lift an eyebrow as she steps toward me, the gorgeous length of her body on display in a way only a confident woman knows how to manage.
Fully clothed in a deep burgundy dress that matches her lipstick, and all I can do is picture her naked.
“We’ve been hoping to share the news for a while, but…” Remmy pauses and lifts a shoulder, her eyes staying on me as a slightly devious expression takes over. “Sometimes you’re just so happy, you don’t waste time on anyone but each other.”
Then she looks over at Krissa, who is watching Remmy with just as much awe as I am, but with slightly more distaste.
