It doesn’t surprise me that his response is almost instantaneous. And when his message pops up on my phone, I laugh quietly to myself.

Wyatt: Cafeteria. You here?

Me: Yeah. In Ivy’s room. She said she kicked your asses out.

Wyatt: I think she needed some space. Mom went home. I’m staying the night tonight.

Me: You guys have been handling this for the most part. I can stay tonight.

Wyatt: You sure? Hannah was going to come by and hang out for a while, too. It’s not like I was handling things alone.

I grin, not surprised that Hannah was planning to come and help keep Ivy company tonight.

But I know they could probably use some relaxing time, just the two of them, especially if they were originally planning for this week to be a trip to London.

Me: I’m sure. I’m here tonight.

I wait for Wyatt’s response but nothing comes through, so I close my phone and settle back in my chair.

Catching Ivy’s eye, I give her the update.

I’m gonna stay here tonight.

She smiles at me, and I know I’m not only doing right by my brother, but also my sister, my baby sister who I need to make sure I’m spending more time with.

Really?

I nod, reaching out and squeezing her foot through the hospital blanket.

It’s been too long since I’ve gotten you all to myself, I add.Tonight is gonna be just you and me. Date night.

Ivy grins and snuggles more into her bed, twisting to the side and watching me with hope in her eyes.

Seeing it there makes me happy, because I wantherto be happy.

She deserves it. If any one of us deserve to be happy, it’s Ivy.

“Knock, knock.”

I turn my head and look to the door, my eyebrows rising when I see Logan Becker with a clipboard and a long white jacket.

“Hey, Logan.” I stand, crossing the room and giving his hand a shake. “Good to see you.”

“You too.” His eyes flit to Ivy, who I realize is slowly starting to doze off.

“So much for our crazy party tonight,” I joke, gesturing to my sister before returning my attention to Logan. “You on rounds or something? Is that what it’s called?”

He gives me an easy smile. “Yeah, I’m on tonight. Checking in on the champions all over the east wing.” Then he crosses his arms and nods his head in Ivy’s direction. “I heard she was here. I don’t know why I didn’t make the connection that she’s your sister, though. I saw on her chart she’s dealing with PNH?”

Nodding, I turn so we’re both facing away from her, thankful in this moment that her deafness will prevent her from hearing what I’m about to say. Habit has me lowering my voice.

“Gotta be honest, Logan…we’re terrified. Dr. Lyons said she needs a bone marrow transplant but she’s already in the system and there aren’t any matches.”

“No siblings that can provide it?”

I shake my head. “Wyatt and I were adopted, and we’re not even close to a match. She has two half-siblings, but Dr. Lyons said they’re not a match either. So we just have to, what—sit and wait and hope a miracle happens?”

When Logan doesn’t respond, I look over and see him lost in thought, stroking his face.
