“I think we might take off too,” I say, the words falling out of my mouth before I can think any better of it.
Paige’s eyes narrow. “Really? I can’t think of any reasons for you to leavenow.”
I clench my jaw, catching her meaning.
“Well, Remmy just got back and excuse me for wanting her all to myself.”
I say it mostly as a joke, but it falls flat and no one laughs.
“I’m assuming we’ll be seeing you at my house tomorrow?” I say quickly, my eyes trying to glare holes into Paige’s. “For the party?”
A beat passes—two—before she responds.
“I think Lennon’s my ride over.”
Which isn’t an answer. It’s a threat.
I grin, though it probably looks a lot more sickly than I’m hoping for it to come across.
“Great. Well…” I stand, Remmy following me. “I’ll see you ladies around.”
Remmy waves, giving the group a smile before she slips her hand into mine and we head out.
When we get to the front, I realize Lennon’s still here, waiting for the valet to bring her car around.
“You’re alright to drive home?” I ask her as I come up on her left, passing my ticket to the other valet.
Lennon’s head turns in my direction, but she doesn’t look at me. “I only had one drink earlier.”
I nod, the three of us standing in silence together.
“So, Lennon, any new guys?”
Remmy’s question feels like it comes out of left field, and I have to resist the urge to glare at her.
Lennon laughs, the sound slightly pained, but then she glances at me quickly before she looks at Remmy.
“Nah. One guy isn’t enough for me.”
I feel my body tense.
Remmy giggles on my right. “Oh, really? Been busy?”
“Definitely. I like to mix things up, you know?” She sticks her thumb out. “There was my teacher a while ago, and then my boss. One night was a cop.”
I bite my lip.
“Wow. Sounds like you’ve been busy.”
The valet pulls up with Lennon’s MINI Cooper, and she takes a step away from us.
“I was hoping to sleep with a plumber later, but I don’t think that’s gonna work out.”
Remmy makes a weird face. “Oh…kay.”
Lennon rounds the front of her car and hands some cash to the valet, her eyes finding mine over the hood.
And even though I know she was goofing around a bit just a second ago, that bit of sadness in her eyes wipes away my smile.
