“Sebastian,” she growls under her breath.
“Fine. I’ll take her there. Have fun doing whatever you do when you’re not in the office.”
Madison’s face softens as she turns to look at me. “He’ll walk you over.”
“Uh, I think I can find it myself.” I’m stalling. I’ll say just about anything to not have to deal with him alone right now.
“Nonsense. It’s a big office. The HR department is on the other side of the floor, and you haven’t had a proper tour. Sebastian will take you.”
I sigh and take a deep breath. “Okay. Thank you.”
Madison nods in my direction and walks toward the door. “Take good care of her, Sebastian,” she shouts over her shoulder before closing the door.
Fuck me.
The door closes with an audible click, and my stomach rolls again for a third time.I can’t do this. There is no fucking way I can do this with him here or now.
“It’s so nice to see you again, princess.”
His deep, husky voice filters through my ears, and it takes me back to where I don’t want to go. The way he says princess turns me on and infuriates me. I don’t know if I want to smack him across the face or fuck him on his mahogany desk.
“Yes,Brooks.” I use his name the same way he calls me princess.“Or, if you’d rather, I can call you Sebastiansince you go by many names.”
His nostrils flare. “Brooks is my nickname, usually used outside of business.”
I don’t bother trying to hide the tiny bit of aggravation that’s in my voice. “Oh, so you only use Brooks for pleasure?”
“Devin.” He says my name with a softer tone and a tiny piece of my bravado cracks. “It’s my last name… a nickname.”
I know he wasn’t expecting this either and it’s no more his fault than mine, but this entire situation has me a hot mess inside of my head. “I get it. I’m sorry. I’m not mad at you, only angry about the situation we’re now in.”
“Well, I’m angry with you.”
Huh? This is not my fault. “What? Why? I had no idea who you were Friday or even that this was the job I was taking.”
“You ditched me.”
“I didn’t know I was obligated to stay.”
“I wasn’t done with you.”
“I don’t dothat,Sebastian.”
“Do what?” A smirk plants itself on his lips as he cocks a brow. “Have one-night stands?”
“Exactly.”
“You did, though.”
“Believe me, I know. Of course, the one time I do, it’s with the worst person I could do it with.”
He cocks his head. “Why are you acting like this is such a bad thing? If anything, I should be the aggravated one in this situation. You left me high and dry in a hotel room.”
“I guess I beat you at your own game, huh?” I huff annoyed that we even have to have this discussion. One time. One time I do something reckless, well reckless for me, and it bites me in the ass.
“That you did, Ms. Miller.” He smirks annoyingly. “I have to say, while it annoys me, it also turns me on. You left me wanting more, only to deny me the very thing I wanted.”
My frustrated sigh fills the air. “Too bad. We need to forget that night if we’re ever going to be able to work together. This is highly inappropriate.”
