We got into the car after placing all my purchases in the trunk.

"Hey, we can look ourselves."

"Nah. She’s always able to find the great places to stay. And I want to enjoy you. I don't want anything taking my focus off you."

Had he really said that, or had I imagined it? How could he be so romantic?

He immediately took out his phone. "Hey, Greta. I'm in Milwaukee for the night with Liz. Can you please book us a hotel? I want something with a great view. Thanks. Send me the details when it's done. Yeah. Have a great day. I'll catch up with everything tomorrow."

"I can't believe this is my life," I said before realizing I'd actually uttered the words out loud.

"What do you mean?"

"I'm opening my bakery soon, and today I'm here with you. And we're, you know, taking a day off and enjoying life. And it's amazing."

"I'm glad this makes you happy," he murmured.

Greta texted him all the information about the hotel. It wasn’t far away, and they told us we could check in at any time, so we headed right there.

Half an hour later, we were at our hotel.

"Oh my God. What did you do? Did you have her book us the presidential suite?" I asked as we stepped inside the room. It was enormous. And the view was absolutely breathtaking. The window was huge, and it overlooked Lake Michigan. It wascalled the Pfister Hotel, an older grand place that had charm and all the conveniences imaginable.

"I want the best for my woman," he said.

There he went again, being all romantic. When had that happened?

Closing the suite door, we walked toward the window. He was slightly behind me as I stopped, taking in the view: the twinkling lights, the skyscrapers, the cars milling below, and the quiet lake.

"That's one thing we’re missing at the house," he said. "We don't have a view of the lake."

"It's gorgeous," I said.

He put one hand on my hip and the other at the side of my waist, resting his head in the crook of my neck. He only stayed like that for a few seconds, and then he started raining kisses on it. My skin broke out in goose bumps.

"This was a terrific idea," I said. Turning around, I decided to taunt him a bit. "Even though I'll have to go commando tomorrow."

"You won't go commando," he growled.

I loved it when he got like this. Like he couldn't possibly share any part of me with the world. I loved that he wanted me so much.As much as I wanted him.

"You'll be there with me to save my honor, if need be."

"You bet I will," he insisted.

CHAPTER 20

DECLAN

Once we got backfrom Milwaukee, Liz hit the ground running. She still had three shifts left at the bar until the new person started full time. I was incredibly proud of her work ethic, but that meant I saw even less of her, since she spent a lot of her free time prepping the bakery. It made me restless.

I liked seeing her in my house, sprawled in my bed, or walking around in my shirt. It didn’t matter what she was doing or what we were talking about. Ineededher, and that was insane.

Milwaukee was everything I’d hoped it would be. Our evening at the Pfister was great. We’d stayed in that night, and I’d wined and dined her. She was over-the-top excited and appreciative, like no one had ever done anything special like that for her before.

I planned to spoil her again as soon as possible. On the evening after her last shift at the bar, I decided to surprise her by planning a date. I showed up at the bar, parking right in front of the entrance. It was eight o’clock, but she’d only gone in for a couple hours to hand off everything to the new hire.

"And that's it, my last shift," Liz exclaimed as I opened the car door for her when she exited the building. She was smiling brilliantly.
