Zoe broke the kiss with a grin. “Ten years sounds reasonable. I should get back on the train right now.”

“Or we could just move even faster and go back to my place?” Julie planted a peck on Zoe’s mouth. Her head was dizzy with how unreal everything felt.

“Is this how you always talk to girls?”

“Oh no, I’m way worse usually. I’m an absolute jerk. Shall we?” Their faces were only inches away from each other.

“Good thing I didn’t book a hotel.” Zoe stood up and slung her backpack around her shoulder.

“Is this howyoutalk to girls?”

“No, just to you. I’m a perfect gentlewoman, usually.” Zoe held out her hand and Julie took it. It fit perfectly in the palm of her hand, as if it was always meant to be.

She walked back towards her apartment with Zoe by her side and nothing else between them. It was all she’d ever dreamt of. The streets were golden and it was a perfect setting for Zoe. Her brown hair reflected every sparkle of light and when Zoe noticed that Julie was looking, she turned to her and smiled.

It was worth the ten-year wait.

Chapter 37

When they arrived at Julie’s apartment, Zoe was delighted to discover that it was just a more adult version of Julie’s student flat. The same movie posters were on the wall, now displayed in dark frames.

“You still kept this one? We hated that movie.”

Julie groaned. “But the poster is so nice and I got it for free from the cinema.”

“Igot it for free from the cinema and gave it to you,” Zoe said, unimpressed.

“Well, I still got it for free.”

Zoe shot her a look.

“Anyway, I’ll show you around.”

Julie took Zoe through her small apartment: the kitchen, the living room, the bathroom. The bedroom.

“And that’s it. My entire apartment. I know you’re not used to such luxury but I think you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.” Julie grinned. “What’s your place like in London?” She leaned against her stylish antique dresser.

“Too big, to be honest. And we were never home.” Zoe said. “It’s a nice place you’ve got. I can see myself here. I’ll put my cookbooks there.” She pointed at a shelf.

“Oh I see. You’re moving in already?”

“Yes, we’re moving fast, remember?” She approached Julie and slid her hands around her waist.

“How fast?” Julie cocked an eyebrow, but suddenly, Zoe found she didn’t have time for any more jokes.

She kissed Julie, hard and sudden, opening her own mouth against hers. She could feel Julie gasp and her whole body tense for a moment, and then Julie kissed her back, harder, her tongue wrestling against Zoe’s. They were in no rush, and yet every moment seemed so urgent. Zoe felt Julie’s firm hands run on her back, under her shirt. A second later and Zoe was lying on her back on the bed with Julie on top of her. She couldn’t believe she’d waited all this time when it was so evident that it was what she always wanted. Someone who made her laugh everyday. Someone who cared about her. Someone who’d always be there.

Julie sat up and threw her jacket and t-shirt away before doing the same to Zoe. Zoe answered by reaching around and unclasping Julie’s bra. She took a long hard look at Julie’s toned body and couldn’t help but put her hands on every inch of her. The last time they were in this position, she hadn’t really had a chance to linger on the details.

“Do you like what you’re seeing?” Julie smirked.

“You should be forbidden from talking during sex.”

“Make me.”

Zoe obliged, sitting up and reaching behind Julie’s head to kiss her properly. With Julie straddling her around her waist, she was happy to be the taller one between the two of them.

But Julie quickly gained the upper hand again and Zoe ended on her back once more. She lifted her hips up as Julie slid her trousers down her legs. Their eyes met, and Zoe could see that Julie’s expression wasn’t cocky any longer. She wasn’t here to joke any more.
