“To their eternal resting place.” Oren’s gaze moved skyward. “They are the stars that shine in the darkness, accompanying the light of the moon. Their mortal bodies are gone, burned away in the filth from Dowler, and they will never feel pain again.”

“I’m so glad they’re free, Oren,” I said softly, my heart swelling. “When you played that song and they changed, it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen or heard. They grew wings, glorious wings, and so did you. What happened to your wings?”

“Ah, they returned only for a moment, sparked by the song of creation to make all the broken things whole again. It allowed us to fly to the portal between worlds, back to this realm. I should have asked you, but Tanith, I couldn’t imagine returning home without you.”

“I’m glad.” I leaned my face against the hollow of his neck and breathed in his scent. “When you told me I could leave with the citizens of Dowler and return to Solynn, I realized I didn’t want that life anymore.”

“No? What do you want, Tanith?” Bending his head, he slipped my robe off one shoulder and kissed my collarbone.

His lips on my bare skin sent a flutter of anticipation into my belly. When his hands drifted down to loosen the robe, I moved to straddle him.

Giving a dark chuckle, he pushed me down. “You haven’t answered my question. What do you want, Tanith?” he murmured against my mouth.

“I thought it was obvious,” I gasped, leaning back on my elbows as he settled himself between my legs.

He opened my robe and tugged it down my shoulders, then paused, trapping my arms behind me. A wicked glint danced in his eyes as he hovered above me. “I want to hear you say the words.”

I licked my bottom lip, drawing Oren’s gaze. Amber lust shimmered as his eyes raked down my body. Instead of touching me, he waited, keeping me on the edge. Rays of sunlight kissed my heated skin. My nipples peaked and ached, but it wasn’t enough.

“You. I want you, Oren,” I choked out, my voice high and breathy.

With a hiss, he crushed his lips against mine, and he tasted sweet like honey, the stain of darkness gone. When he broke the kiss, his jaw clenched. “Do you mean that?” he asked shyly. “Despite how we began?”

“I do.”

With a shudder, he closed his eyes, basking in those words. “Even in my deepest slumber, I never imagined someone like you would ever love me, despite my past, despite our beginning …” He trailed off, his hand closing around my hip, and for a moment I thought he’d cry, so overwhelmed. “I’d marry you again and make a promise to love you, protect you and honor you, no matter where life takes us.” He kissed my shoulders and the swells of my breasts, making his way down my body as he spoke. “You’ve saved me in every way possible, and I adore you. I will do my best to deserve your love.”

“Oren, you don’t have to work for my love. You already have it.”

He lifted my leg and rested it on his shoulder, his lips moving from my ankle up my thigh. “I’ve demanded so much from you. All I want is for you to be happy.”

“I am happy,” I assured him, squirming to free my arms from my robe. “Oren, what are you doing?”

“Kissing you.”

His mouth was dangerously close to my core, and my stomach did an odd flip. “But not there.”

“Yes, trust me, you’ll enjoy it.”

I tried to close my legs, aware that in the light's brilliance, nothing was hidden from his gaze. “But that’s not …”

His eyes smoldered, demanding an answer. “Not what?”

“Not natural,” I gasped, finally freeing my arms.

When I tried to sit up, Oren lifted my legs, spreading me wider. His tongue shot out and licked my core. A whimper escaped my throat as I lay back, surrendering to his feather light touch. The fluttering in my stomach coiled into pulsing need. I wanted him, desired him, needed him to fill me in every way, to take me over the edge of pleasure and let me fall, let us fall together.

“That’s better,” he murmured, licking me again.

I convulsed, spreading my legs wider, arching my back to keep his mouth there.

“I want to hear you scream and feel you go wild under my tongue,” he said between licks. “You don’t know what it does to me to watch you like this. You’ve never looked more beautiful.”

“Oren,” I gasped, my fingers curling into his hair as he moved deeper.

My heart pounded in my chest and blood rushed to my ears as I gave in to the new sensations and the way he used his tongue. My muscles contracted around him, wanting more, deeper, harder, faster. When his tongue lashed my clit, I lost control.

I arched upward, unable to get enough air, enough of him, and pleasure slammed through me. I spasmed from head to toe, shaking so hard I almost knocked him off the bed. But Oren was with me, lifting me as his hardness sank into me. That thrust sent another wave of pleasure flowing through me, and I cried out as he kissed me, my scent on his tongue.

His thrusts came faster, and I pressed against his chest. My nails sank into his broad shoulders and he groaned against me as he moved. I rocked my hips up, meeting each of his thrusts with one of my own. Our sighs of pleasure grew louder, more frenzied as our movements intensified.

Pausing just for a moment, he lay back and pulled me on top of him without breaking our connection. I held his amber gaze as we moved as one. Bending my head, I kissed him, understanding at last what it meant to love and be loved in return. I had a long life ahead of me with Oren, and concerns about immortality faded away, because he was mine, I was his, and whatever future came, we’d experience it together. We had come through darkness to the light on the other side, and with love and magic, nothing would stand in our way.

We made love outside to the tune of invisible music, brought on by the wings of the wind. Perhaps if anyone thought of us, they’d assumed we’d died and gone to our eternal resting place. Where there was no sorrow or sadness or grief or misery.

I closed my eyes and held on to Oren’s shoulders, letting the waves of pleasure wash over me again and again. And around us was nothing but light.
