Santa couldn’t come with them because it was obviously a trap of some kind, but he could send his magic with them to undo Frost’s defenses.

As they prepared to leave the perimeter, with enough males to combat Frost’s forces without leaving Northernmost vulnerable, he had the strangest feeling that Aralyn was near him.

He shouted for everyone to be quiet and when they’d all closed their pie holes, he could hear someone crying and the sound of someone running.

He knew it was Aralyn.

“Shit, it’s my mate!”

“Watch out for an ambush,” Santa warned.“Frost could be up to his old tricks.”

Maverick didn’t care, he just wanted to get Aralyn.

Racing toward the sound of her, he shouted, “I’m coming, sweetheart!”

Maverick took off running before he could think, his heart hammering in his chest as his vision adjusted to the darkness and he finally saw Aralyn ahead of them.He reached her as she dropped like a stone to the cold ground, her breath gusting from her like an icy cloud.

“Mav,” she whispered as he skidded to a stop next to her.

Panic was sharp in his chest like a knife. The security team surrounded him as he lifted her into his arms. She was cold.Too cold.

“Aralyn, baby, hold on,” he said, trying to tamp down the panic and focus on getting her back to Northernmost so she could be saved.

A prickle of unease ran down his spine and then he felt something in the air—a pulse of evil from behind him.

He looked over his shoulder and saw shadows moving toward them, and he knew it was Frost’s followers.

They shouted out war cries, their feet pounding in the quiet.

“Let’s move!”Maverick shouted, tightening his grip on Aralyn.

The group moved, splitting off to keep the attackers at bay as Chase and Asher flanked Maverick. They raced toward the perimeter of Northernmost when several of Frost’s followers appeared in front of them, cutting off their path.

“Hand her over,” one of the males said.“Frost’s not done with her yet.”

“Never,” Maverick said, baring his teeth as his fangs extended. He set her on the ground and stood over her, letting out his claws.

One of the males wielding a blade lunged at Maverick, and he deflected the blow, his bones vibrating with the force of the blow.He twisted and slammed his elbow into the male’s stomach and disarmed him, throwing the blade downward and sinking it into his foot.He howled and fumbled for the blade, and Maverick twisted his head, snapping his neck and grabbing the blade, tossing it to Asher, who used it to stab the male he was battling.

Another male leaped toward Aralyn and Maverick slammed into him, rolling away from her.He slammed his fist into the male’s face and he went limp with the blow.

“Shit, we gotta go,” Chase said, pulling on Maverick’s arm.

He jumped to his feet and picked up Aralyn, racing toward the perimeter.

“We’ve got your back, let’s go!”Asher shouted.

His legs burned as he ate up the distance to the shimmering line of the protective barrier around Northernmost.Santa and several security guards waited just inside the magical line.

He was almost there.

Just a few more steps.

Just as he reached the perimeter he was thrown back, a blast of magic sending him to the ground. He managed to keep Aralyn from the cold ground as his vision flickered with the magical blow and he gasped for air.

“Maverick!”Santa shouted.

Santa, flanked by the security team, moved through the perimeter and joined them.Maverick struggled to his feet with Aralyn in his arms, still dizzy from the magical blow.
