I shook my head. I was starting to worry thathehad a crush onher. “It all makes sense though. She knew all about the coin. She came to Crooked Point to steal it and cure herself. But as soon as she got it, she panicked a bit. Since if she used it, she’d suddenly only have 60 years left of her life instead of 600. She just needed a night to calm down. She’s ready to use it now.”
Callum still didn’t look convinced. He finished buttoning his shirt.
“Well, there’s one way to find out,” Emma said. “Why don’t we just ask her if she is one?”
That did seem like the best option. “Agreed.”
“I think it would be best if I spoke to her in private,” Callum said. “This is a very sensitive subject. And you guys being around isn’t exactly conducive to her telling the truth.”
I didn’t think Kebe needed any more alone time with Callum. And I was done with all the secrets and lies. “Nah, I’ve got this.” I pushed on the door and walked out of the restroom.
“Zoey, wait,” Bennett said. “I really think we need a better plan than this.”
My feet stopped as soon as I walked out of the restroom. But not because of Bennett’s protest.
Titan was standing in the middle of the bank laughing about something with Kebe. I wasn’t sure I’d ever seen him laugh before. All he ever did was glare at me.
Kebe pushed on his arm and kept laughing.
Seriously, what was this girl’s deal? Enough was enough with the flirtations. I stormed up to them. “I know your secret, Kebe.”
Callum sighed behind me.
“My secret?” Kebe looked confused. “Whatever do you mean?”
Oh cut the act.“We know that you’re a vampire like Callum.”
Kebe glanced at Callum over my shoulder and then back at me. “And why would you think that?”
“Because of all that mean stuff you said about werecats.”
Kebe laughed.
Titan frowned.
“And you know so much about the coin and the cure. And you’re an old soul. And the bank dropped ten degrees ever since you set foot into it.”
“Oh,” Kebe said. She looked around at everyone. “Okay. Right.” And then she nodded. “Oh, rats. You caught me red handed. I’m a vampire.”
Why did everything she say sound so insincere?
Chapter 15
Friday
Emma
I stared at Kebe. Her being a vampire did make sense. But why did it seem like everything she said was a lie?
“I can’t believe you found me out,” Kebe said. “I thought I was hiding it so well. Shucks.”
Callum stepped closer to her. “Kebe, I don’t understand why you hid it at all. After everything we talked about.”
I stared at my fiancé. Seriously, what did they talk about all the time that he couldn’t talk about with me? I pressed my lips together. Well I guess they did have something I couldn’t relate to now. Being vampires.
But...was she a vampire? Because I’d never seen her eyes darken. And I hadn’t heard about anyone going mysteriously missing since she’d arrived in town. “Do you feed on animal blood?” I asked. “Like Callum?”
“Oh, yes.” She nodded. “I could never hurt another human. That wouldn’t be right. Callum and I have so much in common in almost every way. Don’t we, Callum?”
