“I’ve been meaning to speak to you about Drex,” she says.

My lips automatically draw back at the mention of the warrior’s name.

“You don’t really think he did anything voluntarily, do you?”

I remember how she was when he was poisoned and in the clinic. Looking over him like a female Sarkarnii might over her young.

“He is a traitor in the eyes of my clan and the other warlords,” I respond. “He has to pay.”

Scarlett studies the console in front of her.

“But if he didn’t know what he was doing, then he’s paying for someone else’s evil.”

“You care what happens to him?”

“I care what happens to all of you.” Scarlett fixes me with a steady gaze. “If you’re going to dance for me, I should care. If I’m going to bring Sarkarnii babies into this world, I should care.”

I want to dance for her so very much. The celebratory feast is in two nova-days and with all my clan in attendance, shifted or not. I want to show her off to all of them as my mate and the soon to be mother of my two sarkarnlings.

I want Scarlett to be happy.

“So, if I release Drex, that would please you?”

“If you forgive Drex, that would please me.”

I can understand what she wants. I should not hold what happened against the young Sarkarnii, who was, as far as the interrogations undertaken by Driok have discovered, unaware of what he was doing, which has proved unhelpful in determining exactly what happened on Vorostor, save the fact the shadow entity and all the tech installed by the clones has been removed and destroyed. All of which I was able to pull directly from the subconscious thoughts he was having.

I should forgive Drex. He had no choice, whereas I have all the choices.

“Then it is done. He will be forgiven and released at the feast.”

The corners of Scarlett’s mouth twitch up. “And there may be something else you can tell your clan at the feast,” she says.

“What?” I incline my head, searching her face for the answer.

Not knowing her thoughts is both the best and the worst.

“There’s a new chemical marker in your blood. The system thinks it’s a way of curing your clan of the virus which means they have to shift.”

“Virus?” I’m on my feet and rushing to her side. “We checked for viruses when we first became ill.”

“Looks like this one was able to hide itself from your tech. Only once you were cured, the marker became apparent.” Scarlett points to the swirling DNA strand. “And your blood can be used to synthesize a serum to cure it.”

“It can?” I pull her into my arms. Scarlett squeaks.

“Don’t squeeze me too hard. I’m full of ice cream!”

I want to ask what ice cream is, but I need her scent in my nostrils. I’d like to have my cock in her cunt, but I figure we can always mate later.

“I can cure my clan?”

“That’s what all of this is telling me.” Scarlett waves at the console.

“But what cured me?”

“Not mating with me, if that’s what you think.” Scarlett laughs. “But something did, and now everyone gets to be saved.”

I pull her to me, luxuriating in her scent, so different from the first time I took her, carrying her over my shoulder like chattel.
