To dosomethingwhich will bring him back to me.
“We need to find his second in command, Dalsor.” I grit my teeth. “He’s the one behind the devices which have been plaguing Vorostor Central. We need to get him to tell uswhat he’s been doing and who he’s working for, maybe get an advantage over the evil professor.”
“Two pregnant ladies interrogating a massive Sarkarnii?” Kerra looks at me. “Actually, that sounds like fun.”
“What sounds like fun, mate?” Darax strides towards us, all tail and glowering good looks.
“Oh, nothing,” Kerra says breezily. “Only Scarlett is pregnant too,” she adds.
Darax lifts his head and scents the air.
“I thought there was more than a scent of Dexx in here.” He grins. “Well, the great beast finally did the deed. Mated and claimed.”
“Not claimed,” I murmur, as if the knife couldn’t be twisted enough.
Darax raises his eyebrows, but he doesn’t say anything.
“Scarlett says Dexx’s second in command is behind the devices and explosions.”
“Then we need to find him,” Darax intones.
Kerra gives me a knowing look, and despite all my churning emotions, I have to work hard not to snort a laugh.
She certainly knows how to deal with her Sarkarnii. I’m going to have to get her to give me lessons, given nothing I’ve done so far has made an iota of difference.
Dexx still fucked off at the earliest opportunity pursuing revenge or some such nonsense. So, now it’s my turn. I’m going to get something done too. I’m going to deal with Dalsor, and Dexx will see how we could have worked together.
Because until he comes back, I am back to nothing once more. The woman who was abducted by aliens, who couldn’t even fight to stay on her own planet.
And I won’t go back to being that person. Not because of Dexx, not for any reason.
I have changed, and it’s about time I used the change for my benefit, as well as my friend’s.
“Let’s get back to Vorostor,” I say firmly to Kerra. “It’s time to have some questions answered.”
SCARLETT
It’s entirely possible my confidence was misplaced. Without Dexx, his clan warriors are listless. I don’t want to order them around. After all, helpfully, Dexx hasn’t claimed me, and I haven’t been elevated to being by his side and his equal, like Kerra has with Darax.
But also, these are warriors who are exhausted. With the fact they have no option but to shift every twelve hours, they’ve been fighting among themselves ever since mining functions had to cease, and now they are leaderless.
I probably shouldn’t be mad at them for mostly ignoring me, but I am. I’m furious at the big dragon guys.
I walk into the dining hall. There are half a dozen warriors eating in silence. A couple look up at me and leave. Those remaining ignore me.
“Has anyone seen Dalsor?” I ask.
I don’t get a reply. It makes me want to shout at them, but I don’t think it will help.
“I need to find him to help Lord Dexx,” I add.
A couple of the warriors look up at me and then at each other.
“He was last seen in the secondary control center, mistress,” one of them says.
“Drex?” I peer through the gloom at the warrior who spoke.
He gets to his feet and gives me a slight bow. “Yes, mistress.”
