It will not do so any longer, not while I have breath in my body. I can put down the current threat and gain the information I need while I do so. Flames lick at my insides. No one puts my Scarlett in danger.

I press my lips to Scarlett’s. “This won’t take me long, heartsfire. Dante will…” I look over at my fellow warlord who is glaring at the blank screen. “Scrap that. I will be back for you.”

She allows my hand to trail from hers, no further words said as I stride out of the control room to the dock.

Whatever this creature is who thinks they can take on Sarkarnii, they are wrong, and they are about to find out just how wrong they are.

SCARLETT

Iam at once seething at Dexx and terrified for him as he leaves the control center. I want to go after him, but I don’t want to chase him.

Not when he’s doing something so stupid and ignoring all the rules we agreed on. Plus, he’s leaving me when I asked him not to.

But my anger can’t quite overtake my sadness. As much as anger would be something I could really channel my emotions into, it isn’t enough.

“Little female.” Dante hops from foot to foot, his tail lashing. He doesn’t seem to know where to look. “The other female, the one mated to Darax, wishes for you to join her on his ship.” The look in his eyes suggests he’d rather I was anywhere else than on his.

“Fine, I’ll go.”

Dante indicates to one of his warriors who also eyes me with something between suspicion and fear, but he leads me through to an airlock where Kerra is waiting for me.

“I heard what happened with Dexx,” she says, taking my hand.

“Dexx is an idiot.” I can’t meet her eyes or I know I’ll cry.

I don’t want to cry. I want to be angry, even if being angry would make me cry too.

“He’s probably following his instincts,” Kerra says quietly.

“More likely he’s reverted to his feral self,” I respond.

“You know Sarkarnii.” Kerra sighs. “What we consider feral is quite normal.”

“But this time, not only is he leaving me but…” I stop speaking, eyeing Kerra, hoping she might not put two and two together.

“You’re pregnant too?” She gasps.

“I didn’t say that.”

“But youare!?” Kerra takes hold of my elbows and does a little jig.

“Now do you see why I’m so cross?”

Kerra stills. “It takes a lot to injure a Sarkarnii, and even more to kill one. You know that. If Dexx left, he left for a reason, and he will return to you and your baby.”

“Babies.” I groan. “I’m having twins.”

Some of the color drains from Kerra’s face. “Twins?” she whispers.

“Yes, I’ve already had the talk from Cestapal before you start telling me about big Sarkarnii babies.”

“Just, wow, Scarlett. Well done.”

“Not so well done given the father has pissed off on his own private revenge quest.”

“I don’t think it’s really like that.”

In my heart, I want to believe Kerra is right. I want to trust Dexx, to believe in him, to be his champion.
