“Don’t worry, I think we both have the same idea,” I say as I snap my visor down, stopping him from seeing how hungry I look.
The way his eyes widen, how he sucks in a breath, and how even more pheromones wrap around me tells me maybe we aren’tquiteon the same wavelength.
All I want is to see Jaxx Sands on his knees telling me he’s sorry for being such a cocky asshole. But he smells way too horny for just that.
As quickly as his sexy smile appears, it vanishes as he leans back, suddenly serious.
“Don’t forget your switches. Make sure you’ve got your gears set, remember the route and the turns you need.”
“I got it, Jaxx. Don’t worry about it.”
“I mean it,” he says, his hand curling around the cockpit, his glove creaking as it tightens. “Don't be afraid to ask for help.”
His brow stays furrowed as I kick the engine into gear and almost moan as the familiar sound shakes through my whole body.
Thank God he stepped back because I’m already close to perfuming as a rumble of power fires through me from the car.
I sit there as Jaxx gets himself geared up and hops into his own car. I’m meant to follow him for the first lap. I have to remind myself not to get overconfident. I keep telling myself I'm a good driver, but not in an F1 car.
Just because I’d raced the Texas track back when I was in F2 doesn’t mean I know what I’m doing. Especially if I’m planning to hit 200kmph in a car I’ve never driven before.
Harmony
I groan again as I rev the engine.
It isn’t just because Jaxx, Maddock, and Everest’s scents have me more fired up than the car. It’s the feeling of sheer power as I put my foot down and feel her roar around me.
Jaxx parks in first position, and I line myself up in second.
“Comms check. All okay?” Jaxx asks, his voice now directly in my ears.
Normally they wouldn’t let drivers talk between them, but as my teacher, Jaxx gets a special exception.
“All clear. I’m ready when you are,” I shoot back.
“Jacob, hit the lights,” Jaxx says.
“Roger. Just take it easy on this one, Harmony. No need for any theatrics,” Jacob says.
I can’t believe he’s nagging me in public. Cast members and other film crew are watching the screen in the comms tent. There's also photographers set at different points around the track to take shots of me for promotion.
But getting annoyed at Jacob helps distract me from the nerves that burst inside me as I look up at the five traffic lights above us.
I never thought I'd sit on a professional track again.
As each one shines red, my heart pounds, thumping so loud inside my head that I almost whimper.
I’m not scared of racing; that has never been it. That isn’t why I quit. But the memories of what used to come before and after a race are hitting me hard. I need to get my feet ready to go if I’m going to keep up with Jaxx.
I draw in a deep breath as the lights flick on one-by-one, and the revs of our engines boom around me.
The second those five lights vanish, my foot is off the brake and we shoot forward.
A thrill bursts inside me as Jaxx takes off, and I keep close on his tail as we pick up speed.
“First corner coming up, we’re turning hard left. Take it slow and wide,” he hums.
With Jaxx in front, I can’t push it like I had all those other times I’d been here.
