‘Yeah, I don’t think pipping my sister at the post would go down all that well,’ I reply. ‘And obviously, I didn’t know that guy was married. We were only chatting.’

‘Like I said, I’m just bored,’ he replies. ‘We aren’t all here with side quests.’

‘What do you mean?’ I ask.

‘You, on your mission to find a date,’ he says. ‘It’s something to do, isn’t it?’

I laugh.

‘Would you like to pretend to be my impressive wedding date?’ I offer up playfully.

‘Oh, no, I am in no way impressive,’ he replies quickly. ‘But trying to find the right person must be fun?’

‘Feel free to do it for me,’ I reply.

‘It’s been said before that I make an excellent wingman,’ he informs me. ‘You can do a lot worse than me.’

His eyes sparkle as he flashes me a friendly smile. There’s something about his face that makes me feel smiley too.

‘Okay, go on then,’ I say.

‘What?’ he replies.

‘Be my wingman,’ I tell him. ‘I’m clearly doing a terrible job on my own, and I am going to be on my own because until I have a date sorted out, my plan is to avoid my family.’

‘Totally normal,’ Donnie teases me.

‘Yeah, well, I’ve made my bed now,’ I reply. ‘Want to help me find someone to lie in it?’

‘Okay, deal,’ he says with a laugh. ‘I was only going to be knocking around on the beach today anyway. Side quest accepted.’

‘How about you meet me in reception in twenty minutes?’ I suggest. ‘I’ll pop back to my suite and then see you there.’

‘Ooh, she has a suite,’ Donnie teases. ‘Okay, sure, see you in twenty.’

Well, this is interesting. There may be a lot of men here, but it seems like I’m going to have to navigate them carefully. Ah well, at least I’m not doing it alone now.

As I sink my teeth into the burger, my eyes involuntarily roll into the back of my head.

‘This is the best burger I’ve ever had,’ I announce.

‘Who knew pineapple in a burger worked?’ Donnie replies.

‘Honestly, put pineapple and cheese in everything, they’re a dream pairing,’ I say. ‘How is your steak?’

‘Really good,’ he replies. ‘Although that could be just because I’m not eating it alone.’

‘You are brave, coming on holiday on your own,’ I tell him. ‘I’m not sure I could do it.’

‘Well, the clue is in the title, with the bad break-up,’ he explains. ‘I thought it might be weird to come here with my ex.’

I burst into laughter.

‘You did not just say that to me,’ I tell him playfully.

‘Oh, God, sorry,’ he blurts. ‘I wasn’t taking the piss, I promise.’
