‘You and Jack Daniels,’ Trevor dares to joke. ‘Shall we?’

We follow Trevor to the kitchen where a small table is laid out with what I’m going to guess is every dessert on the menu.

‘We thought you might like to sample a bit of everything, undisturbed,’ Trevor says. ‘I’ll leave the two of you to enjoy.’

‘Do I want to know why you’re getting a private table, with every dessert on the menu?’ Donnie asks. ‘Not that I’m complaining, if I get to join you.’

‘Honestly, I have no idea, but just go with it,’ I suggest as I pull a plate of profiteroles closer to me.

‘Do you think this will work at the bar?’ Donnie asks curiously.

‘We could try one after dinner, to find out, if you like?’ I suggest with a shrug. ‘There’s no way, after I put away this lot, that I can have dessert with my family too.’

‘Sounds good,’ he says with a laugh. ‘Oh, wow, is that a lemon tart?’

‘Have at it,’ I say generously – because I’m so generous with my free desserts when I have fourteen of them.

‘You have to try this,’ he says, offering me a mouthful on his fork.

I laugh as I lean over to take a bite.

Oh, boy, that’s good. The bursts of citrus, the crunch of caramel, and the smoothness of the velvety custard. I’ve never had a lemon tart like it.

‘Mmm, that’s great,’ I tell him, my eye scanning the table for our next victim. ‘Ooh, try this.’

I grab two small deep-fried dough balls, popping one in my mouth, before passing one over to Donnie. They’re covered in chocolate sauce so, rather than take it in his hand, he opens his mouth for me to pop it straight in there.

‘Amazing,’ he says through a mouthful.

I suck the chocolate from my fingertips.

‘Honestly, I’m in heaven,’ I announce. ‘I don’t think there is anything you can say, to convince me I’m not dead.’

‘It doesn’t get any better than this, does it?’ Donnie replies. ‘Unless we had a cuppa.’

‘Oh, my God, imagine having a cup of tea to wash it all down,’ I say, fantasising.

‘It’s worth a try, right?’ Donnie says with a wink.

I watch as he gives Trevor a wave, beckoning him over.

‘How are the desserts?’ Trevor asks.

‘Just… phenomenal,’ I tell him.

‘Yeah, they’re really good,’ Donnie agrees. ‘We were just wondering if it might be possible to get two cups of tea.’

‘Of course,’ Trevor replies. ‘We have honey orchid oolong, ginger spice chai, Egyptian Chamomile…’

Trevor’s voice trails off.

‘English breakfast tea?’ Trevor says, already knowing that the answer is yes.

‘That would be amazing, cheers,’ Donnie says.

‘I’ll be right back,’ Trevor tells us.

I notice some kind of pineapple and meringue dessert in a bowl so I place it between us.
