“Who, Tate? He’s just flirting. He does that with all the girls.”

“Not my girl.”

“So, I’myourgirl now? You won’t even park your rental at the house.”

“You know why, Vonnie. Come on now. Don’t do that.”

“I’m just saying. If we’re going to be sneaking around, confronting me for having a casual conversation is going to make people talk.”

Was it considered sneaking around if I had walked the mile to the crew’s quarters three nights so far since everyone had been back so that I could see Vonnie without any prying eyes or speculation? I considered it more ‘keeping people out of our business.’ Not that I minded people knowing how enamored I was with Vonnie, but I wanted to wait for the film to wrap before going public. I didn’t need any necessary distractions.

“Fuck them,” I countered.

“We agreed that we didn’t want to confuse people.”

“There’s a difference between being confused and mistaken. Someone thinking you’re on the market is a mistake.”

“Am I not on the market? We haven’t really discussed these things, Shawn.”

“Keep the nigga out of your face, Vonnie.”

“Or what?”

I felt like I was about to burst into flames as she stared me down. I was fuming, but I knew she had a point. I didn’t care about a point, though. I needed her to know I was trying not to snatch her friend up by the throat. Instead of listening, she wanted to challenge me.

“Or I’ll make him wish he learned how to stay away from my baby. Then I’ll remind you whose name you were screaming half the night.”

“I don’t know… I kinda like the sound of that.”

“Please don’t test me, Evonne.”

“How is that a test, Marshawn? You know I love a good dick down. I think you’re testing me.”

“Come on, baby. Be serious.”

“You can’t ask me not to talk to the cast. I’m not sure if you can ask me not to talk to anyone.”

“Vonnie, you know what we’re doing.”

“You know what? I really don’t. What are we doing?”

I sighed. “Don’t make this complicated.”

“Oh, I won’t. Have a nice day, Marshawn,” she said before storming off.

I wanted to follow her, but I might as well have been talking on a megaphone in the first place. There were enough eyes on our exchange; I didn’t want to pull in even more attention.

Fighting the urge to go behind Vonnie, I shook my head and turned to head back over to where Gia was sitting, shaking her head too.

“What the hell did you do, Shawn?”

“Do you ever mind your business?”

“Rarely. I told you to go over there and tell her how you felt. It seems like you pissed her off.”

“I guess she doesn’t like me.” I shrugged.

“You just had to be you, didn’t you?”
