“Your words, not mine,” I chuckled.
Dal took aim at my secondary engine and fired.
The laser hit home, sending a jolt of electricity through my starship and jarring the computer systems. Another alarm rang out in tandem to the others. The shrill sounds filled my ears.
I had to get out of here. There was no way I was going down to Dal like this. Or ever. But, especially now that I had his mate to use as a bargaining chip.
My eyes flicked down to the hyperdrive. It would be a risk to use, especially with my second engine out. This old ship could barely make it to lightspeed without dying.
Dal’s ship came up over top of us. I could see him through the gleaming windows. His eyes were wide with rage.
“Dal!” Kylie screamed.
It made me sick to hear her call out for an alien that disgusted her. I was better than him, even if I did technically sort-of kidnap her. She’d see that soon enough.
“Hold on, Kylie,” I warned.
“What? What’s going on?” She cried.
“I’m going to kick us into hyperdrive. Try not to puke on the upholstery,” I said with a laugh. My hand moved from the throttle to a large switch.
Hyperdrive engaged.
A computer voice spoke, and all of my screens went dark. The ship trembled, and the lights went out. For a moment, it was like we were suspended in space, and the next moment, we were gone.
