LEGACY

“This cake is soooo good,” Jennifer stated. “Why don’t you eat some?”

“Girl, I haven’t even eaten lunch yet. The last thing that I need is a sugar rush from a baby shower cake.”

One of the attorneys was going out on maternity leave, and we had thrown her a surprise baby shower. There were lots of finger foods and cake. I had nibbled on a few finger foods, but I had not had a complete meal yet.

“Well, at least take a slice for later,” Jennifer stated, setting her plate aside and grabbing another one that held a slice of cake. She shoved it at me, leaving me no choice but to take the cake.

“I’ll eat it later,” I stated to appease her.

“You’d better. I can’t be the only one around here getting thicker in the hips from all this eating.”

“How about you go get some work done and burn those calories off,” I teased her.

She giggled and headed down the hallway. Armed with my slice of cake, I headed back to my little office. I bumped the dooropen with my left hip and frowned. I could have sworn that I closed the door all the way when I left.

I kicked it closed behind me, but it didn’t close all the way. I rounded my desk to set my cake on so that I could go back and properly close the door. But I was in for a much bigger surprise. There wasn’t a surface uncovered on my desk.

“Oh my goodness.” There was a large puzzle taking up every part of my desk that the computer did not occupy.

The puzzle was a picture of Legend, Kayson, and me at the zoo. “Oh, my goodness, how sweet is this?” I whispered.

When had he done this, and how had he managed to slip this past me? My heart melted in my chest at the sweet gesture. I moved to find a small surface that I could set the cake on without getting crumbs or anything on the puzzle, and that was when I noticed the second item.

On a lavender sticky note, I noticed there was some messy scribbling. I immediately recognized it as Legend’s handwriting. I balanced the cake with one hand and reached for the lavender sticky note with the other. I pulled it off the corner of the puzzle and read it aloud.

“Will you be our girlfriend?”

I giggled so hard at that thought, and it made me realize how much I had not only missed Legend but also Kayson. Over this last week, Legend and I had been making our way back into each other’s lives by way of phone calls, text messages, and I had visited him once. But I hadn’t seen Kayson because he had been with his mother. I knew she probably wasn’t excited about having me around her son after the way that I behaved. But Legend told me he had explained the misunderstanding to her, and she was forgiving, especially considering how much Kayson loved and talked about me all the time. That was a shock, because I had no clue about that.

“Well, what’s your answer gonna be?”

I looked up and saw him leaning casually in the doorway. He looked delicious in his dark black suit, crisp white shirt, and black and mauve tie and pocket square. My mouth dropped open, and I laughed. “You are such a sweet man. What did I do to deserve you?” I asked, rounding the desk.

“I don’t know. I’m thinking I’m too good to be true for you too.”

“You’d better remain the same.”

He chuckled, pulled me into him, and gripped my ass as he kissed my lips. I pulled back a little and stared at him. “Mm. Tastes like someone’s already had a bite of cake.”

“I might have had a bite or two,” he answered with a smile.

“Were you okay?” I asked, referencing the topic of the baby shower.

“I’m good, baby girl.”

“Good.”

“Let’s head upstairs to our favorite hideaway.”

I giggled. “We’ve been once, and now it’s our favorite?”

“It’s mine. Figured you might wanna adopt that too.”

“As long as you’re there, it’s my favorite too,” I replied.

“Good. Let’s go.”
