“Is this a problem for you?”

“Nah. Just asking questions.”

“Oh,” she replied softly.

I couldn’t deny the woman the right to want to settle down and procreate, but I also didn’t want to lead anyone on. I knew that it wasn’t something that I wanted to do, not yet, anyway. My heart had been through the ringer and back. It couldn’t take anymore. As much as I loved Legacy, I needed to slow things down with her.

If there were anyone who could be in my future, it would be her, but I wasn’t sure that I was ready for marriage again and extending my little family. I was honestly happy with the way things were.

I served Kayson and Legacy before I fixed my plate and sat down with the two of them in the living room to watch a movie that Kayson picked out. We watched the movie and laughed with Kayson. Kayson kept the conversation as delightful as always, but it was stilted between Legacy and me.

I hated the tension that was between us, but I knew it stemmed from our conversation earlier about children. It wasn’t something that I could go deeper into in front of Kayson. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how to address it with Legacy without spilling my whole heart.

But my whole heart couldn’t take dredging up the past. There were certain things that I had buried deep, because they broke me inside whenever I thought about them. I was in a position now where I had to remain strong for Kayson. No one could understand what I felt and what I was going through. It was easier to push it down and ignore it than allow the pain to drag me into the depths of depression again.

Chapter 14

Legacy

“Are you okay?” I asked as we lay in bed later that evening. It was my first time spending the night while Kayson was there.

Legend asked him how he felt about me spending the night, and he was excited. He wanted to know if I would be spending the night in his bedroom, but Legend told him that I would not be. I wanted to tell him that I was sleeping in the guest bedroom, but Legend was absolutely adamant about not lying to his son.

He explained to him that I would be spending the night, but I would be staying in his bedroom.

“I’m good. Why do you ask?” Legacy was lying on his back with his arm folded underneath his head. He stared at the TV as one of the players went up for a layup in the basketball game he watched.

I turned on my side and watched him. Dragging my fingernails down his chest, I dipped my finger into his belly button. He grabbed it and moved it.

I rolled my eyes and then slid my hand into his boxer briefs. I nestled my hand into his underwear and gripped his dick. It waswarm and semi-turgid. I massaged him, and he glanced down at me.

“I can’t watch my game?”

“I want you to talk to me.”

“Ain’t nothing to talk about, baby. We’ve been talking all day.”

He turned his gaze back to the TV again. I sensed that something bothered him deeply, but I refused to give up until he shared his concerns with me. I was sure that whatever it was, it might have been overrated in his head. We could work through whatever problems arose if he just gave us a chance.

I danced my fingers across his belly and then walked them back and forth like dancing fingers. I dragged my fingers back up and combed them through the hairs of his beard. Moving in between his legs, I rested my head on his chest. My back was to his front.

“For real, Ace?”

“What?”

“You just gon’ put yo’ big head self up in front of the TV. You know I can’t see the TV with your big lighthouse ass head.”

I sat up and turned around before I smacked him in the chest. “Legend.”

“What?”

“That’s mean.”

“I’m just telling the truth.”

“The light though?”

“That shine you keep on ya big forehead. You can’t deny you got a big ass forehead, baby.”
