“I like that,” she replied as I released her hands.
I leaned in and kissed her cheek. “You be good, li’l mama.”
“I will, Legend.”
I watched as she walked to her car and climbed inside. Before she closed the door, I called after her. “Legacy?”
“Yeah?”
“Next time, we won’t be meeting up here at the job and putting folks in our business and shit. I’ma roll through like a real G.”
She smiled, blew a kiss, and closed the door. I hopped back inside, feeling happier and lighter than I had in a very long time.
Chapter 9
Legend
ONE MONTH LATER
With all the projects I had going on and a major case that kept her busy, Legacy and I had not been able to squeeze in that date night right away. We had shared lunch on multiple occasions and even worked out by walking the stairs together, starting at the bottom and walking up to the twentieth floor.
The night of the zoo trip, I called her to check on her and to give her a heads-up that I was having dinner delivered to her place, so I would need the address. She giggled and told me I was doing too much but finally gave in when she admitted her stomach was growling, and she was too tired to cook.
That phone call was followed by another the next day, when I called to check on her. We had quickly grown to talking on the phone every night, to share details about our days. The little texts that I sent to check on her midday had turned into back-and-forth texts daily throughout the day, to share some tidbit with the other one about what was happening in our day.
Tonight, we would finally get that much-needed date night I had been hoping for. Kayson was with Kali, and I wouldn’t see him again until Monday. It was Friday night, and Legacy had the day off. I’d been working from home all day, so I left early, around four, to get things in order for our night.
“You look beautiful.” I greeted her when she answered the door of her apartment.
“Thank you.”
“These are for you.” I handed her a bouquet of forget-me-nots.
“They are so beautiful.” She admired the vibrant blue flower petals and sniffed them. “They don’t have much of a fragrance; it’s very subtle.”
“I know. I didn’t get them for their floral aroma but to send a message to the recipient.”
“I could never forget you or Kayson.” She giggled, walking back into her apartment and beckoning me to follow her.
“You’d better forget that little nigga tonight. It’s about you and me, baby girl,” I replied as she put the flowers in a vase.
She walked back around and took my hand, and we walked out of the apartment.
“It’s hard to forget that little guy, so you’ll have to do a lot tonight to get him off my mind. But I can put him on the back burner while I enjoy my time with you,” she teased with a wink over her shoulder as she locked her front door.
Placing my hand on her lower back and guiding her to my SUV, I replied, “Trust me when I tell you that when I’m done with you, you’re gonna be like ‘Damn, you got a son? How come I never met him?’”
She giggled and slapped my chest before she stated, “You’re so corny.”
“Yeah, whatever. Let’s have this conversation again at the end of the night,” I replied, opening the car door for her.
“Do you mind if I control the radio station?”
“I’ll do you one better. Press that button right there.” I pointed at a button on the dashboard as I pulled out of the parking lot.
She did as I asked, and the smooth sounds of Michael Saxson, a popular saxophonist, flowed through the speakers. Legacy glanced at me with a large smile.
“How did you know that I love him?”
